A new clip from The Suicide Squad shows Task Force X’s reaction to Weasel. Writer/director James Gunn is best known for his work on the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Guardians of the Galaxy franchise. As a sequel and spiritual reboot of David Ayer’s 2016 film, Gunn’s upcoming entry in the DC Extended Universe, The Suicide Squad, sees Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn and a few other returning characters joined by even more oddball villains.

The Suicide Squad’s new members are led by Idris Elba’s Bloodsport and John Cena’s Peacemaker, the latter of whom has already received his own spinoff series. To assemble the rest of the roster, Gunn dove deep into DC’s vast rogues’ gallery, bringing villains like King Shark (Sylvester Stallone), Blackguard (Pete Davidson), Thinker (Peter Capaldi), T.D.K. (Nathan Fillion), and Polka Dot Man (David Dastmalchian). In anticipation of the film’s August release on HBO Max and in theaters, promotional material is ramping up. The latest clip showcases the team’s reaction to one of the strangest additions to Task Force X, Weasel.

In this new clip from The Suicide Squad (via BD Horror Trailers and Clips), the team is introduced to Weasel, who is played by Gunn’s brother Sean. Blackguard asks if Weasel is a dog, while T.DK. suggests he's an Afghan Hound, and Harley assumes he’s a werewolf, prompting Blackguard to panic. Then, Rick Flag (Joel Kinnaman) tries to calm everyone down, letting them know that Weasel is not a werewolf and that he’s harmless...well, not harmless, as “he’s killed twenty-seven children," but he at least agreed to be on the mission (sort of). Check it out below:

In the comics, Weasel was first depicted as a man in a costume. Later, he became much more animalistic, something The Suicide Squad seems to be adapting to an extreme degree. In the trailers and other promotional material, the character is seen leaving “gifts” for the squad and licking windows (among other things). Gunn has cited Bloom County’s Bill The Cat as inspiration for his version of Weasel and, while he seems to be framed as comic relief, that remark about killing twenty-seven children shouldn’t fall on deaf ears.

Weasel is dangerous in DC lore. Whether or not he’ll utilize his powers in The Suicide Squad remains to be seen. Given Gunn’s affinity for the source material and Weasel's comic book penchant for ambushing his victims, it seems likely audiences won’t see him coming. He might even play a surprisingly pivotal role late in the film. Regardless, this new clip demonstrates the cast's chemistry and is yet another example of how Gunn is bringing his signature irreverence to a franchise that sorely needed it—which is surely one of the many reasons early reactions to The Suicide Squad are so positive.
