Anne Hathaway, star of Disney’s The Princess Diaries, celebrates the 20th anniversary of the film’s release. The Princess Diaries, which was released in 2001, is based on a popular series of YA books by Meg Cabot. A sequel, The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement, was released in 2004. Both films were directed by the late Garry Marshall.

Hathaway played Mia Thermopolis, an awkward high school student whose life is turned upside down when she learns she is heir to the throne of a small European kingdom called Genovia. Mia, who has spent her life so far living with her mother in San Francisco (a change from the books, which take place in New York) and was unaware of her royal lineage, must decide whether to take on the responsibilities of the crown or give it up forever - all while juggling the demands of her regular teenage life. Along the way, she is given “princess lessons” by her estranged paternal grandmother, Queen Clarisse of Genovia, played by the inimitable Julie Andrews. Though Hathaway would later win an Oscar for her performance in Les Misérables and go toe-to-toe with Meryl Streep in The Devil Wears Prada, The Princess Diaries was her breakthrough role.

In celebration of the beloved film’s 20th anniversary, Anne Hathaway shared an Instagram post with photos from The Princess Diaries. She referenced Myra’s song “Miracles Happen (When You Believe)” from the film’s soundtrack in her caption, writing, “Miracles happen… Happy 20th Birthday to #theprincessdiaries, AKA the film that launched a thousand sleep overs” followed by a crown emoji. The post includes photos of Hathaway with Andrews and Marshall, as well as photos of co-stars Heather Matarazzo, Mandy Moore, and Sandra Oh, who had a small but memorable role as the school vice principal. It also includes a shot of the film’s well-known makeover scene, and a clip of Hathaway raising her pre-makeover eyebrow that fans will recognize instantly. Check out her post below:

Hathaway wasn’t the only cast member to share memories of The Princess Diaries today: both Moore and Matarazzo posted on Instagram as well. Moore, who played high school mean girl Lana, mentioned the song “Stupid Cupid” which her character sings in the film. (Though Moore was already a pop star and would of course go on to play many high-profile roles, including her current star turn as Rebecca Pearson on This Is Us, The Princess Diaries was her first live-action film role.) Matarazzo, who played Mia’s best friend Lilly, voiced her appreciation for the experience of working on such a well-loved film, and for the chance to learn from director Marshall.

Though it’s been 20 years since The Princess Diaries was released, the film remains popular to this day. This is likely due in part to its original fans now being of an age to share the movie with a younger generation, and being able to do so easily by streaming it on services like Disney+. Of course, The Princess Diaries also benefits from the enduring charm of its storyline and the impressive star power of its cast. Rumors of a sequel have swirled for years, with Hathaway herself confirming a script has been written, but so far fans are still waiting. It hasn’t hurt their appreciation for the original film, though - based on the nearly 2 million likes Hathaway’s post received in its first 12 hours, love for The Princess Diaries won’t be fading anytime soon.
