Fortnite Is Distracting Pro Soccer Players, According To Manager

In a Q&A, Italian professional soccer team A.S. Roma's manager, José Mourinho, said Fortnite is a distraction for pro footballers. The wildly popular online multiplayer game has experienced similar criticism in the past, frequently due to concerns over children extensively playing Fortnite.

Mourinho's opinion on Fortnite is not uncommon among professional sports organizations across the globe, and it seems players are aware of Fortnite's influence on their abilities to perform as well. After a particularly bad 2018-2019 season, the Vancouver Canucks banned Fortnite on trips when one of the team's players suggested the game might be too much of a distraction. That same year, Toronto Blue Jays players banded together to impose a pre-game curfew on playing Fortnite due to the game potentially impacting team performance.

The A.S. Roma Twitter Q&A (via GamesRadar+) focused on a variety of topics, ranging from Mourinho's thoughts on living in Rome to whether he enjoys using Instagram. For each question, Mourinho generally had something positive to say in response; when asked about Instagram, he described the social media platform as "fun." The manager showed enthusiasm for A.S. Roma's home field, Stadio Olimpico, calling it "fantastic" in Italian. However, when the topic of Fortnite came up, he called it "a nightmare," explaining that, "Football players, they stay up all night playing that s**t. And the next day, they have a game."

Unfortunately for Mourinho, Chapter 2 Season 8 of Fortnite is around the corner - and could arrive around when A.S. Roma kicks off its own upcoming season. Developer Epic Games is also currently gearing up a slew of new crossover character releases, including The Suicide Squad's Bloodsport, who will be available in the Fortnite Item Shop on August 3.

With new Fortnite updates and releases on the horizon, Mourinho might still have to deal with players staying up late playing the popular battle royale. Fortnite already has a lot to offer those who have an interest (or job) in professional soccer, especially after this past season incorporated soccer-themed challenges to unlock a Neymar Jr. skin. If needed, though, Mourinho and A.S. Roma can follow the example set by other professional sports teams that felt compelled to restrict players from spending too much time playing Fortnite.
