Green Knight Director Believes Movie's Delayed Release Made it Better

The Green Knight's director David Lowery has revealed that he believes the delayed release made the finished product a much better film. Originally set to premiere at the South By Southwest film festival in March of 2020, with its general release set for the following May, The Green Knight was delayed due to the pandemic. During this time, Lowery spent six months re-editing the film in order to better fit with his artistic vision. The edited version reworked the pacing of the film and also gave more screen time to Alicia Vikander, who plays the dual role of Essel and The Lady.

An adaptation of the 14th century poem Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, the film follows Dev Patel's ambitious Gawain, nephew to King Arthur, who sets out on a quest to confront the titular Green Knight portrayed by Ralph Ineson. The Green Knight takes a much darker and eerie approach to the Arthurian legend than previous iterations, with Lowery committed to putting his own unique stamp on the tale. Reviews have been overwhelmingly positive, with critics praising its mesmerizing visuals and Patel's performance in particular.

Filmed in Ireland, The Green Knight had a long and arduous production process which severely affected Lowery's view of the film. Speaking to THR, Lowery stated that "It took [him] a long time to get past [his] memories of how miserable the shoot was … it took a long time for the rose-tinted glasses to emerge." He also added that he was ultimately grateful for the delayed release as it allowed him to overcome whatever baggage he brought with him from production and make a version of The Green Knight that better fit with his vision. Read Lowery's full statement below:

"I think [the production] rubbed off on my perception of the movie, more than the film itself. It took me a long time to get past my memories of how miserable the shoot was. (Laughs.) And it took a long time for the rose-tinted glasses to emerge, as they always do, for me to be able to look back on it fondly. It was a great time. I had so much fun making this movie, but in so many regards, it was also a nightmare and really, really hard. But I would never complain. It was a luxury that I got to make this movie. I was very grateful that I had the opportunity to make it, but it took far more out of me than I expected. And as a result, I carried a lot of that baggage with me for a lot longer. Had the film come out last year, maybe you would’ve seen evidence of that baggage on screen in the way that I cut the movie. But because I had time to re-approach it and to redevelop some affection for it and to let that baggage fall away, the film doesn’t bear much evidence of all of that pain now. Although certainly for Dev, you can definitely see what he went through. (Laughs.) That’s all loud and clear right there on camera."

While Lowery didn't believe that his original cut was in any way bad, he did believe that looking back at the original cut he can" say now with authority that it was a lesser version of [the film]" but only from his own perspective. The film's runtime changed significantly during the editing process, going from three hours, to just under two, to the final product which is about 130 minutes. Lowery reflected that the delay, and the additional time spent working on the film allowed the director to achieve "everything [he] was hoping to accomplish with the film, [he] was able to bring it to a much greater fruition when [he] was able to re-approach the edit."

Lowery isn't the only director to take time granted by the delays that the pandemic caused to re-work their film, with Chloe Zhao likewise taking time to recut Marvel's upcoming Eternals. The decision to take time to do so definitely seems to have aided The Green Knight greatly if the reviews are anything to go by. While we will likely never know what the original cut of the film was like, perhaps that is for the best if it better aligns with Lowery's vision for the film. If he is more content with the finished film, then all the better. Audiences can judge for themselves, however, as The Green Knight is in theaters now.
