Jake Johnson officially confirms that he will not be returning to Jurassic World: Dominion as Lowery Cruthers due to scheduling conflicts and the ongoing pandemic. Johnson first rose to prominence as one of the main stars on the hit Fox sitcom New Girl and as a supporting performer in a number of films but has since found stardom in larger roles on the big screen with the first Jurassic World and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. In the former trilogy launcher, the actor portrays Lowery, one of the technicians in the Jurassic Park control room who is a large fan of the original park.

The Jurassic World films acted as a follow-up to the original Jurassic Park films as a new rich benefactor decides to open a park on request from John Hammond with the help of BD Wong's geneticist Dr. Henry Wu. The first film was a large box office success, grossing over $1.6 billion against its $150 million budget, and earned generally positive reviews from critics, who called it an entertaining return to form for the franchise. Thanks to this success, plans to develop a new trilogy moved forward with the maligned Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom and next year's finale, Jurassic World: Dominion, which is bringing back original stars Sam Neill, Laura Dern and Jeff Goldblum alongside most surviving Jurassic World stars, though plans have changed for one actor.

While chatting with Looper to discuss his newly-released indie comedy Ride the Eagle, Johnson opened up about his involvement in Jurassic World: Dominion. Despite original plans for him to return as Lowery in the film and having received a script with his character in the story, Johnson confirms he was unable to return due to timing conflicts with the COVID-19 pandemic and his family. See what Johnson said below:

"So, Colin [Trevorrow] had written a great part. Lowery came back. It was a great conclusion. I was excited to do it. The pandemic hit, and at that time, there was a two-week quarantine. It was a bunch of stuff that I couldn't get out and leave the family, and we kept trying to make it work. And in the end, the dates just didn't work out for that one, which was heartbreaking because apart from being in that movie, Colin's a very old friend.  We did Safety Not Guaranteed together, and years before that, we did a bunch of like YouTube shorts. He tried everything he could to make it work. I tried everything we could, and the math just didn't ... Hopefully, what happens is as they're cutting the movie, they realize they can do a quick reshoot, and we'll pop something off really fast now. So as of now, it's not happening, but Lowery never dies — he just multiplies. So maybe there's another chance he can find his way in."

While the first Jurassic World was no masterpiece, it was easily the best installment in the franchise since Steven Spielberg's original film and Johnson's Lowery was a good part of its success. In addition to Chris Pratt, the New Girl star helped infuse a knowing sense of humor into the film, from insensitively wearing a Jurassic Park shirt to still poking fun about the dangers of the park even as people are losing their lives. Given the park shutting down after the events of the first film and his cynical view of dinosaur hybridization, it did make sense for him to skip out on Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom's island-set story, however the possibility of his return for the new film was an exciting draw for fans.

As the dinosaurs are now roaming the Earth once again and humanity must find a way to coexist with them in Jurassic World: Dominion, it would have been interesting to see how Colin Trevorrow and Johnson would explore Lowery's opinion on the matter. Additionally, it would have been fun to see him interact with the original franchise stars as Lowery likely views them as heroes of his and would likely geek out as much as the rest of the group. With any luck, the filmmaker and star will be able to use the year left until the film's release to sneak Lowery into the story in some capacity.
