A cinematic trailer for Season 5 of Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War and Warzone teased the new season's mind-control plot. Black Ops Cold War, developed by Treyarch and released in 2020, is the most recent release in the long-running first-person shooter series. Warzone, released in 2019, is a battle royale title that continues to grow and evolve over time.

Launching back in June 2021, Season 4 of Black Ops Cold War and Warzone added a number of interesting new features and mechanics to both titles. A deep dive into Season 4 revealed all of the update's new additions, such as a major change to Warzone's Gulag arena and a new dirt bike vehicle for traversing the open map of Verdansk. For Black Ops Cold War, Season Four added a number of new maps such as Hijacked and Rush. New playable Operators were added to the game's roster, such as Salah and Weaver from the original 2010 Black Ops. New weapons were also included with Season 4, along with additions to the game's beloved Zombies mode. A midseason Reloaded update, released on July 15, added even more content to the games such as a sentry gun kill streak, new modes, and maps.

A new cinematic trailer for Black Ops Cold War and Warzone's Season 5, posted to the Call of Duty YouTube channel, gives details about the update's narrative. The video shows a previously unseen character, a skilled female hacker, infiltrating a German facility. Uploading some sort of radio signal, the hacker is able to drive enemies into an uncontrollable frenzy. The end of the cinematic reveals that the hacker is working for Vikhor "Stitch" Kuzmin, the main antagonist of the current Warzone storyline. Season 5 is set to launch on August 12.

Alongside adding entirely new features and mechanics, Warzone and Black Ops Cold War updates also bring balance changes to different areas of the games. The Season 4 Reloaded update brought many balance changes, nerfing certain weapons and buffing others to maintain their competitive viability. Several of Warzone's assault rifles, such as the AK-47 and FARA 83, were given nerfs in order to reduce their all-around dominance compared to other weapons. As with past updates, it is likely that the start of Season 5 will include weapon changes to maintain the ever-shifting balance of the Call of Duty titles.

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War and Warzone have managed to maintain a strong player base thanks to frequent updates and dedicated support from developers. With the games' fifth season ready to begin, it remains to be seen what new gameplay changes will be brought to the table. However, the cinematic trailer does set up a fascinating storyline that will surely run through the upcoming season.
