Sesame Street Movie: Free Guy Director Still Hoping To Make It Happen

Free Guy director Shawn Levy is still hoping to make the Sesame Street movie happen. Sesame Street resonated with children and adults alike when it first aired on PBS in 1969. Combining sketch comedy, animation, and puppetry, Sesame Street has introduced some of the most iconic characters in television history. In 2019, Warner Bros announced that fans could expect a Sesame Street live-action musical starring Anne Hathaway to arrive on the big screen. Previously slated for a January 2021 release, Sesame Street hit the brakes and has since experienced numerous delays.

Speaking with Collider, Levy, a producer of the film, reveals that he hopes the Sesame Street movie will still happen and be slated for a theatrical release. Citing the reasons for the film’s delays as being due to Hathaway’s schedule and the pandemic, Levy explained that Sesame Street still has a theatrical release deal, but Warner Bros. is “pushing a lot of their content towards HBO Max.” However, Levy declared that Sesame Street could still move forward quickly if director Jonathan Krisel and Hathaway are open to reworking their box office profits deals with HBO should Sesame Street shift to release on the streamer.

With original songs composed by Bo Burham, Sesame Street is expected to feature Chance the Rapper in a supporting role. Of course, Sesame Street continues to pull in strong ratings for HBO and the movie is long overdue to be seen on the big or small screen. Given Sesame Street’s massive popularity, the live-action musical adaptation could be a success for Warner Bros. Indeed, the creative forces behind the Sesame Street film are working hard to ensure the long-awaited film ends up being debuted in the best possible light.
