The Suicide Squad's Nathan Fillion has described what it was like to film the huge beach scene at the start of the movie. Inspired by the superhero Arm-Fall-Off Boy, aka Splitter, Fillion's character T.D.K (The Detachable Kid) has the ability to remove his arms and manipulate them telepathically. His powers are treated as something of a joke in the film, as he attempts to utilize his powers to incapacitate a group of enemy soldiers, only to prove more of a mild inconvenience. T.D.K joins other notable Z-list supervillains including Sean Gunn's Weasel, Daniel Dastmalchian's Polka-Dot Man, and Flula Borg's Javelin in Amanda Waller's (Viola Davis) newly assembled Task Force X, alongside more successful characters such as Idris Elba's Bloodsport and Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn.

James Gunn's take on Task Force X serves as a stand-alone film that is only loosely connected to David Ayer's much-maligned Suicide Squad from 2016 by a handful of returning characters. The film does however feature a number of actors who worked closely with Gunn in the past, including Fillion, Michael Rooker (Savant), and the director's brother Sean Gunn. All three appeared in 2010's Super, and Gunn and Rooker have also appeared in both Guardians of the Galaxy films. Fillion also appeared in Gunn's feature-length debut Slither in 2006 alongside Rooker.

Fillion, Rooker, and Gunn make short-lived appearances at the start of The Suicide Squad as part of a distraction team sent to assault a beach on the island of Corto Maltese. The entire scene is an enormous set-piece with a number of explosions and a great deal of carnage. Fillion has since described filming the scene, telling Slash Film that he understood why someone might find it "intimidating" to work on. The sequence was filmed at Pinewood Studios where they specially constructed a beach and jungle with giant curtains to control lighting. He added that the amount of work involved meant "It’s an hour and some to reset" so messing up wasn't really an option. You can read Fillion's full statement below:

"The shot took place on a beach that was constructed at Pinewood Studios on the backlot of Pinewood studios. They stacked up these massive shipping containers and built onto it a giant curtain that you could pull a green screen or a blue screen or whatever screen you wanted, you could pull them back and forth to control all the lighting. We had an ocean with waves, we had a proper beach, there was sand and then there was a jungle beyond and that was all constructed for us. When it came time to really shine, there are squibs going off. There are blanks being fired.

There are giant explosions going off behind you and you don’t just cut, let’s go back and do it again. It’s an hour and some to reset all those things happening so if you can get it in one take, that’s the goal. You want to be that guy that goes boom, nailed it, that’s all you need, let’s move on, so that’s where my hip was. Let’s just do this right the first time. I don’t know, that’s your job as an actor you do that job. I think TDK was loving every minute of that moment, which made it easy for me because I was loving every minute of that moment of his.

Again, just the sheer size of that scene can be incredibly intimidating. Never mind looking around at the incredible celebrity power and just the incredible talent going on all around you. I could see how it could mess with one’s mind because of the stacks could seem awfully high but the fact is these are all really actually great people, who just actually are fantastic at their jobs and that’s why they’re there and they can enjoy it just as much as anyone else can and I think we all understood that we were doing something fun, great and we’re enjoying it as we were doing it."

It's good to see that Fillion also gave credit to everyone involved in creating the scene, adding that they were "great people, who just actually are fantastic at their jobs and that’s why they’re there." Such a scene is always a significant undertaking, especially for the production teams, but it's incredibly satisfying to see them come to fruition. Moreover, Fillion's assertion that while it was a daunting feat, shooting the scene was also an incredibly enjoyable experience because of how successfully it all went and who he was working with, is a feeling that many of the cast seem to share.

As far as openings go, The Suicide Squad's beach sequence is an incredibly bombastic one. It also perfectly establishes the tone of the film by blending its carnage and violence with a significant amount of dark humor that serves the film well for the rest of its run-time. The events also have significant repercussions on the rest of the characters later in the film too, which is important otherwise it could so easily be seen as an explosive set-piece that only exists for its own sake. Fortunately, through the hard work of all involved, the scene pays off and proves an excellent way to open the film, and it's an even more impressive accomplishment with Fillion's comments in mind.
