The Last of Us Players Discover That Joel Looks Creepy Without A Beard

A Reddit user posted a series of photo edits showing central The Last of Us character, Joel Miller, without a beard - and it looks uncharacteristically creepy. The Last of Us is a 2013 action-adventure game developed by Naughty Dog and is currently being adapted into a television show by HBO.

A character's physical appearance is sometimes just as representative as their personality. In the case of The Last of Us's Joel, his unkempt beard represents his status as both a father-like figure and rugged adventurer trying to survive the post-apocalyptic United States. This is not the first time a beard has drastically influenced a video game character's aura. Pictures of God of War's Kratos without a beard circulated in 2018. Normally, Kratos sports a thick beard that complements his hairless scalp, but the beardless look made the already-intimidating antihero appear downright terrifying.

Using the photo editing tools FaceApp and Picsart, Reddit user Knutsdeez uploaded a series of images showing The Last of Us' Joel without his trademark survival beard. One of the images shows the clean-shaven Joel side-by-side with his normal bearded appearance, and the difference is stark. The usual fatherly looking, Joel is suddenly replaced with the appearance of someone slightly more ominous and much older. Other Reddit users reacted negatively in the comments, with one saying, "It just feels wrong, like I want this to be a sin against humanity." Another user put their thoughts even more simply, commenting, "Thanks, I hate it."

The Last of Us is currently being adapted into a television show by HBO, and it was announced that The Mandalorian actor Pedro Pascal will play Joel Miller. Pascal typically sports a mustache, occasionally pairing it with a chinstrap beard, so it's worth wondering if the actor will grow as thick a beard as Joel's for his upcoming role. Other roles in The Last of Us adaptation have been confirmed as well, and it seems like the adaptation's cast could successfully evoke the game's central characters. For one thing, The Last of Us' Marlene will be portrayed onscreen by the same actress who voiced her in the game, Merle Dandridge.

If this Reddit photo series serves as evidence that Joel's beard in The Last of Us is of the utmost importance, then Pascal and others working on the upcoming television adaptation need to include some bushy facial hair. A beardless, or even comparatively less bearded Joel Miller takes away from his character - and Joel is already complex as it is. If HBO's The Last of Us television adaptation requires Pascal to grow a bushier beard, then it's safe to say they're likely moving in the right direction.
