Eidos Montréal isn’t too worried about the lackluster sales of Marvel’s Avengers when it comes to promoting its new Guardians Of The Galaxy game, and Kamala Khan is a big part of the reason. Square Enix’s take on the popular team of heroes from the comics and silver screen caught many fans’ eyes when it was first shown off at E3 back in June, and it has been building up a steady stream of excitement in the months since.

Taking the role of Peter "Star-Lord" Quill, players will be tasked with rallying his rag-tag team of misfit mercs to save the universe from a still-unknown threat in Marvel’s Guardians Of The Galaxy. The game will feature branching paths through the use of dialogue options and narrative choices, and early trailers have shown off plenty of the humor and dysfunctional character dynamics that made the Guardians such a hit in the MCU. Square Enix has much riding on Marvel’s Guardians Of The Galaxy as well, as its last Marvel-based title has been struggling to make a profit since it launched last year - though this hasn’t been a problem for Guardians developer Eidos Montréal.

In a recent sit-down with Rock, Paper, Shotgun, Eidos Montréal senior producer Olivier Proulx explains how the appearance of Kamala Khan in last year’s Marvel’s Avengers was an encouraging sign of how his team has free to explore the Marvel Universe and take things in a new direction with Marvel’s Guardians Of The Galaxy, and that they aren’t feeling any pressure as a result of Marvel’s Avengers’ troubling sales figures. “We know the expectations coming with a Marvel IP are sky high, people are looking at it with a lot of attention to detail. It didn't put any more pressure on the team, we already wanted to make the best possible game from the get go.”

Sure enough, while Crystal Dynamics’ Avengers title proved divisive among gamers and comic book fans due to its bland combat and over-reliance on microtransactions, the game's portrayal of Kamala Kahn, aka Ms. Marvel, was one of few areas that were met with widespread praise. Already a popular character in the comics thanks to her likable personality and relatability as a fan of the Avengers who becomes a heroine herself, Kamala served a vital role in the plot of Marvel’s Avengers as the one who brings the team back together following a tragedy in San Francisco, and her humor and optimism throughout the single-player narrative served as a bright spot among players.

Ms. Marvel might not have been enough to help Marvel’s Avengers with its struggling sales figures, it’s great to know that her prominence in that game is inspiring Eidos Montréal to take bigger risks with its upcoming Marvel’s Guardians Of The Galaxy, which is already showing great promise ahead of its launch on October 26. As for the Avengers, players will be able to step into the role of the Black Panther in the upcoming Marvel’s Avengers: War For Wakanda DLC on August 17.
