Casino Royale director Martin Campbell tells fans he was "disappointed" by Bond films Quantum of Solace and Spectre. With its 25th film No Time to Die set to arrive later this year, the Bond franchise is still a big deal even though the first movie in the venerable series came out way back in 1962.

Of course even a series as financially successful as the Bond franchise will go through its ups and downs over the course of so many decades. In many people’s minds, the series had reached one of its low points by the time of 2002’s Die Another Day, despite that film being a huge box office hit. In hopes of reinvigorating the series' tired routines, producers brought in experienced Bond director Campbell – whose 1995 effort GoldenEye kicked off the Pierce Brosnan era – along with a new Bond in British actor Daniel Craig. The combination proved a winning one as Casino Royale triumphed at the box office while satisfying critics and hardcore Bond fans. In addition to tweaking the Bond formula in several key ways, Casino Royale presented a grittier and more conflicted Bond than seen in previous films, a move that not only suited Craig’s talents but also proved a breath of fresh air after the increasingly ridiculous Brosnan films.

Despite being the man who reinvigorated the Bond series with Casino Royale, Campbell was not brought back for its sequel Quantum of Solace. That movie then proved to be a dud with many Bond fans and in fact Campbell himself seems to share the sentiment that it didn’t live up to the new standard he set with his own 2006 Bond effort. Speaking to fans in a Reddit AMA via u/lionsgate, Campbell gave his opinion on the Bond movies that came after his, and indicated that in his mind there was only one good one in the bunch. He said, “Disappointed in Quantum of Solace. I really liked Skyfall, but I thought Spectre was disappointing as well.”

Quantum of Solace of course marked the beginning of the “art film” approach to Bond, with Marc Forster taking over directorial duties. That artsier way of doing things would be carried over to Skyfall with Sam Mendes in the director’s chair, resulting in the other recent Bond film that Campbell liked. Then for Spectre the series veered in a different direction, seeming to take its cues from the Brosnan era of Bond by upping the action, while making the controversial decision to create a personal connection between Bond and bad guy Blofeld.

Campbell unfortunately doesn’t elaborate on his Bond opinions in the Reddit AMA but one can assume that he shares many of the most common fan complaints about Quantum of Solace and Spectre. Quantum of Solace in particular seemed to many like a misstep after the way Casino Royale brought back the franchise, and Spectre has been criticized for its excessive running time, dumbed-down action and unnecessary character twists. Indeed, it seemed Campbell handed producers the perfect template for a modern-day Bond film with Casino Royale, which makes it all the more puzzling that they’ve seldom followed it since. On the other hand, it’s hard to argue with the box office numbers, as both Skyfall and Spectre went on to top the $800 million mark worldwide.
