Christian Bale is set to produce and star as convicted preacher John Lee Bishop in The Church of Living Dangerously. The Dark Knight and Thor: Love & Thunder actor is no stranger to taking on true-life roles, having taken on a number of them throughout his career, including roles in Werner Herzog's Rescue Dawn, Michael Mann's Public Enemies, David O. Russell's American Hustle and most recently in James Mangold's Ford V. Ferrari. Bale famously made waves when he lost 120 pounds for his role in The Machinist, before going on to star in Christopher Nolan's Batman Begins, just six months after completing filming.

Bale has since lost or gained weight for roles, going to extreme measures to look the part each time. His efforts may have served him well professionally, earning him an Oscar for his 2011 portrayal of Dicky Eklund in David O. Russell's The Fighter and a Golden Globe in 2019 for Vice. Since hanging up the cowl for Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight trilogy, Bale has stayed extremely busy, with upcoming projects including Thor: Love & Thunder and David O. Russell's latest untitled film co-starring Margot Robbie and John David Washington.

Now, another project can be added to Bale's upcoming slate with The Church of Living Dangerously, which is based on the Vanity Fair article of the same name. According to Deadline, Bale is producing and starring in the true-life film, playing the lead role of John Lee Bishop, a preacher from Oregon who became wealthy from his showmanship-like sermons with live animals and theatrics, before losing it all and spiraling into drug addiction and drug smuggling for a Mexican cartel. Bishop eventually gets busted and is convicted to five years in prison. The script for the film is being written by Charles Randolph, who won an Oscar for another true-life tale that Bale starred in, The Big Short. The project has yet to announce a director.

This sounds like a fitting role given his long resume of similarly-themed ones. Bale has consistently been attracted to challenging parts, many of which often require him to change his physical appearance, sometimes in very dramatic ways. Most recently, Bale could be seen with a shaved head and svelte frame for his role as Gorr The God Butcher in Taika Waititi's Thor: Love & Thunder. It's unclear if The Church of Living Dangerously will require Bale to take those steps again, but seeing images of the real John Lee Bishop suggests it won't just be a wig and an extra ten pounds.

Bale has always been an extreme performer and to the benefit of the audience (and perhaps less so for his overall health). With something like The Church of Living Dangerously, the actor will likely have the opportunity to portray John Lee Bishop over a number of years, which means a number of different looks. By all accounts, this is the very definition of a "meaty" role for the actor and one he'll surely make the most of. In terms of who could direct such an endeavor, with both Bale and Randolph involved, perhaps calling in The Big Short's Adam McKay to join the team would be the next best addition to spearhead the project. Regardless of who steps behind the camera, this feels like Bale's movie all the way and its one that will surely entertain and potentially net him another golden trophy for his mantelpiece.
