Those who missed out on hearing from music industry leaders including Black Sabbath’s tour manager Kim Hawes at this year’s XpoNorth 2021 creative industries conference are to be given the opportunity to watch again as key sessions from the programme are available to play back on the XpoNorth YouTube channel from 30 August.

Curated by XpoNorth’s music sector specialist, Alex Smith, this year’s music industry sessions included a fascinating overview from A&R Worldwide on the global music market as it was forced to pivot and adapt under the unprecedented circumstances of a global pandemic. Globally-minded executives from across the music and media landscape formed the panel with Marian Wolf, VP Global Writer Services & BMG China; Kenny “Tick” Salcido, SVP/Head of A&R, Red Bull Records and Monte Malone, Sr. VP A&R Worldwide discussing where the global market is at and what’s on the horizon for the industry in a post-pandemic world.

Addressing the culture of unpaid work in the industry, AIR Management’s Katy Pickles; award-winning mixer and mastering engineer, Mike Cave and Black Bay Studios’ Pete Fletcher talk to Music Producers Guild Executive Director, Matt Taylor about the #KnowYourWorth campaign – an initiative that seeks to counter the culture of unpaid work in engineering and production by educating clients and equipping members with the tools to demand fair pay for their work.

And not to be missed is tour manager Olly Long in conversation with music industry trailblazer, Kim Hawes. Kim Hawes broke new ground for women in the music industry, tour managing some of the biggest bands in the world across a rollercoaster 30-year career. At a time when there were very few women working at the top end of the live sector, Kim pioneered an uncompromising pathway which challenged the largely male dominated structures of the time and saw her reach the very top. In her session at XpoNorth 2021, Hawes describes her gripping journey through some of rock 'n' roll’s true champions of debauchery, to her career as a writer, and her passion for supporting the next wave of young women looking to enter the industry.

XpoNorth 2021 returned virtually for the second year on 16th and 17th June and attracted creative industry leaders, academics, investors and makers and creators from around the world. The event, which took 12 months to plan, was delivered by Ironworks Venue. The whole team supported the delivery of 46 sessions covering a wide range of creative economy topics with 90 international, high-level speakers contributing to the programme.

Alex Smith, Music Sector Specialist and Project Manager at XpoNorth, said, “We had an extremely high calibre of speakers at this year’s XpoNorth creative industries conference and we felt it was important that their thoughts, opinions and discussions on the future of the industry were available to everyone. Over the next seven weeks, we’ll be releasing conference content to watch again by each of our creative industry sector specialists across music, screen and broadcast, digital, heritage, economy, fashion, craft and textiles and writing and publishing. Whether you’re an industry veteran or are just starting out, I’d urge you to check out the recordings to hear from some of the best in the business.”

The music industry sessions from this year’s XpoNorth 2021 are available to watch on the XpoNorth YouTube channel from 30 August. For information on upcoming XpoNorth events visit www.xponorth.co.uk
