League of Legends Game Changers Program Promotes Diversity In Esports

Riot Games has revealed a new expansion of the League of Legends Championship called LCS Game Changers, coming later in September. The tournament will be a week-long event that will promote diversity and inclusivity by featuring some of the most talented female players in the competitive game community who are aiming to become professionals. Interested participants who want to be scouted by professional teams will be able to register for the upcoming event, where they could possibly be getting a shot at becoming one of the ten women who will be joining the LCS Game Changers program.

League of Legends is a massive multiplayer online role-playing game that is considered cited to be the world's biggest esports title due to its contributions and international competitive scene. Making a huge impact on the worlds biggest competitive stage and creating some of the greatest moments in Esports history however, hasn't changed the fact that professional League of Legends opportunities for marganlized groups of players are hard to come by, and Riot is aware.

Working to create "a more diverse and inclusive professional esports ecosystem" beginning with Valorant and now League of Legends, Riot Games made an official announcement on its stating that the new LCS Game Changers is designed to support high ELO, female League of Legends players to assist them with getting a foothold in amateur and professional leagues. As a part of the LCS Game Changers, participants will be grouped into two teams of 5 players. They will experience two weeks of becoming a pro, practicing their skills, daily scrimmage matches, VOD analysis, and insight on how they can improve.

This announcement follows Riot's earlier announcement of the "Valorant Game Changers Tournament" and multiple events that the company hosted for women and marginalized players to compete in a safe and inclusive environment. Although being well-recieved throughout the year, it gained backlash from some fans of the community. Unlike the Valorant tournament, Riot Games will not be broadcasting this event to respect the participants privacy and will be offering the program fully remote. Private guest speakers will also be making an appearance to educate participants on how to fully transition into a professional and will be touching on topics like mental resilience and what the life of a pro is like.

Seeking to pick 10 of the best high-ELO female League of Legend players who apply, Riot Games will be hosting the LCS virtual camp from September 27th to October 8th and picking players early next month. With League of Legends Preseason 2022 also right around the corner, this could give an opportunity to many female and underrepresented players trying to find their way into the esports community.
