New behind-the-scenes photos taken from the set Black Panther: Wakanda Forever have teased the return of Martin Freeman’s Everett Ross. Freeman is best known for his roles in the UK version of The Office, as Bilbo Baggins in The Hobbit trilogy, and as Dr. John Watson alongside Benedict Cumberbatch’s critically acclaimed version of Sherlock Holmes. The British actor, who is a close friend and frequent collaborator with fellow actor and comedian Simon Pegg, first made his MCU debut in 2016’s Captain America: Civil War as Everett Ross.

First created in 1998 by Christopher Priest and Kenny Martinez, Ross’s comic-book counterpart was first written as a US State Department employee tasked with escorting foreign diplomats on American soil whose life was forever changed after being assigned to T’Challa, ruler of Wakanda. Freeman’s version of the character, however, is portrayed as a former U.S. Air Force pilot turned CIA agent assigned to the Joint Counterterrorism Center. After first encountering Chadwick Boseman’s T’Challa during the events of Civil War, his character comes face-to-face with T’Challa once more during a South Korean black market sting operation during which he is critically injured and brought to Wakanda for treatment.

Now with filming on Black Panther 2 well underway, eager MCU fans have gotten their first glimpse of Freeman’s return. Sporting a new beard and a sharp grey suit, the Cosmic Marvel Media Twitter account has shared new pics of Freeman on set.

Not the only MCU character to sport a new bit of facial hair following the events of Avengers: Endgame, Jon Favreau’s Happy Hogan famously grew what he termed as a “blip beard” during 2019’s Spider-Man: Far From Home. Whether Freeman’s dapper new look is due to similar reasons and indicates that he too may have been one of those to survive Thanos’ original snap remains to be seen. After all, there are bound to be far more reasons to decide to grow a beard aside from surviving the post-apocalyptic decimation of half of the universe’s population.

The origins of Freeman’s new beard aside, one of the other questions these new photos raise is that given their adjacent timing to recently released set photos of Dominque Thorne’s Riri Williams, is whether Everett Ross may be the one sent to enlist her talents. Moving forward, Thorne’s character will assume the MCU mantel of Ironheart, and it would make sense that Everett’s boss, Secretary of State Thaddeus Ross (no relation), would want her technical expertise at his disposal. With this just the latest in a series of set images, there’s bound to be a lot more details to come and spark the imagination of fans eager for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’s 2022 release.
