Star Anya Taylor-Joy has described Edgar Wright's upcoming thriller Last Night in Soho as an "acid trip." Although Last Night in Soho's release date has been bumped several times largely due to the pandemic, it's now set to be released on October 29. The film is Edgar Wright's first narrative feature since Baby Driver pulled in a cool $226 million worldwide in 2017 and became one of his most successful films yet.

As one might imagine, Last Night in Soho is set in London's Soho district, but there's a wicked twist. Actress Thomasin McKenzie (Old) plays the modern-day character Eloise, who begins to become unstuck in time and cross over with Taylor-Joy's character Sandy, a singer and fashion icon from the 1960s. The cast also includes Matt Smith, Terence Stamp, and Diana Rigg (in her final performance), but not much else is known about the plot of Last Night in Soho, details of which remain stubbornly elusive.

Although she didn't offer much clarity on what Last Night in Soho will actually be about, in a recent interview with Tatler, Taylor-Joy described the film as "a very well-directed acid trip." That would certainly seem to be in keeping with the time period in which the film is set. She describes the film as if it's a party gone wrong, slipping from something bright, shiny, and fun into a "full-blown nightmare." She also ponders how influential the 60s were even though they burned bright and fast. Read the full quote here:

Our version of London is presenting you with the fine line between downtown where your dreams will come true and a full-blown nightmare that is difficult to get out of. We’ve all had moments when we’ve been at a party, met somebody and thought, “Oh, this is wonderful, this person is really kind and we’re really vibing,” and then seven hours later you’re like, “Oh, this person’s horrible and I no longer want to be in this situation...” [It's] a very well-directed acid trip.

Andy Warhol and Edie Sedgwick were really only active and working for about a year and a half, which blows my mind. It feels like it was this big expansive time and so influential – yet it was a flash in the pan. And 1960s London was like that.

One can trust her judgment because Taylor-Joy knows a thing or two about starring as an off-kilter character. From her breakout role in the Robert Eggers horror film The Witch to her more restrained but nevertheless drug-addled role in the Netflix series The Queen's Gambit, Taylor-Joy has been toeing the line of the strange and psychedelic. This is a habit that will most likely be continuing, now that she has been cast in George Miller's Mad Max: Fury Road spinoff Furiosa.

It will certainly be interesting to see how Taylor-Joy uses her skills to push this new film even further into the realm of hallucinogenic mania. Name-dropping Andy Warhol should definitely indicate her intentions to craft something fitting with the time period that will nevertheless keep us on our toes. Last Night in Soho might be a slippery film to get ahold of, but one thing it's pretty much guaranteed not to be is boring.
