A new fan comic imagines Steve and Bucky’s Rockaway Beach trip as referenced in Captain America: Civil War. Throughout its four phases, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has crafted an impressive roster of over 70 characters. That being said, MCU relationships and/or dynamics could be discussed ad nauseam. However, there are a few iconic duos that come to mind almost immediately, not the least of which are “best friends since childhood,” James “Bucky” Barnes (Sebastian Stan) and Steve Rogers (Chris Evans).

Bucky first appeared alongside his scrawny friend in Captain America: The First Avenger (2011). After Steve became Captain America, Bucky joined his Howling Commandos before plummeting hundreds of feet from a train. In that same film, Steve became encased in ice for nearly 70 years. In Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014), Bucky is revealed to be alive as Hydra’s brainwashed Winter Soldier. Despite Bucky’s transgressions, Steve stands by him, even when the whole world thinks Bucky is responsible for the Vienna bombing and death of King T’Chaka in Captain America: Civil War (2016). As the then fugitives make their way to the Siberian Hydra facility late in that film, Steve reflects on a simpler time, asking Bucky if he remembers that time they had to ride back from Rockaway Beach in the back of a freezer truck.

Artist Rachel Hoo on Instagram recently shared a comic strip depicting Steve and Bucky as children in the early 20th century. The piece imagines the time Bucky blew their train money trying to win a stuffed bear for Dolores, aka Dot. Check it out below:

Thanks to Wakanda, Bucky was able to overcome Hydra’s brainwashing and go on to help Steve save the universe from Thanos in Avengers: Endgame. At the end of that film, Steve left Bucky in the present and traveled back in time to live out his life with Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell) before passing his shield to Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie). Old Steve’s whereabouts remain unknown, but Phase 4 of the MCU has effectively brought an end to Steve and Bucky’s friendship. Thankfully, Disney+’s The Falcon and the Winter Soldier saw Bucky embrace companionship similar to what Steve found in Sam after the “death” of Bucky.

In many ways, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier was a continuation of Civil War, bringing Baron Zemo (Daniel Brühl) back into the fold and further exploring MCU politics. In the end, Sam finally took on the mantle of Captain America and Bucky reconciled his past as the Winter Soldier. Not long after the finale aired, it was reported that Captain America 4 was in the works, and, now, Mackie has been confirmed to star. Suffice to say, Stan will certainly reprise his role as Bucky. Steve or no Steve, he’s with Cap "till the end of the line."
