Daredevil star Charlie Cox reveals that a friend initially believed he was in the trailer for Spider-Man: No Way Home. The upcoming Marvel film follows Peter Parker as he grapples with the consequences of his superhero identity being revealed. In an attempt to reverse this event, he collaborates with Doctor Strange to alter the current timeline. As a result, the movie will explore the ramifications of the multiverse, including parallel realities where prior iterations of comic book figures still exist. During the film’s production, unconfirmed rumors abounded that popular Marvel characters, including Cox’s Daredevil, would grace the big screen.

Cox originally joined the MCU as Matt Murdock on the hit Netflix series Daredevil. Released in 2015, the show acquired a devoted following due to its multifaceted storytelling. Critics and viewers particularly responded to the project’s commitment to unearthing the pathos behind Murdock’s vigilantism. During the day, Cox’s Murdock worked as a blind lawyer fighting for justice. At night, his inability to see proved to be a superpower of its own, allowing him to defeat nefarious villains with his canny sense of hearing and direction. Although the series ended in 2018, fans have continued to push for a resurrection of Cox’s character in some form or another, including potential cameos in blockbuster Marvel films.

While speaking to the Irish Examiner, Cox shared his thoughts on the new Spider-Man trailer. Acknowledging its widespread impact online, he described the moment a close friend attempted to confirm that Cox was in the movie:

“One of my good friends in New York, who knows me really well texted me a clip from a leaked trailer that has me in it. I had to write back to tell him that it wasn’t real. Like you could clearly see it wasn’t real. This is a guy that knows me and he fell for it. I’m like, ‘Do you think I wouldn’t have told you?’”

The Spider-Man: No Way Home trailer included a few teases at the upcoming movie's villains. Notably, Alfred Molina’s Doc Ock from 2004's Spider-Man 2 appeared, ominously greeting a Peter Parker off-screen. Green Goblin's pumpkin bomb is also seen in the trailer, fueling rumors that Willem Dafoe will play the movie's main villain. Jamie Foxx has also been confirmed to reprise his role as the villain Electro. It appears highly possible that Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield will similarly come back to reprise their Peter Parker roles, but much like Cox's role, these casting rumors are still unconfirmed by Marvel Studios.

Considering the enduring impact Cox’s Murdock has left on the MCU, it makes sense that fans have persistently called for his return as Daredevil. Cox imbued his role with an empathetic mix of hard-won grit and sensitivity, but it's important to remember that Daredevil never shared any connections with the MCU. Spider-Man: No Way Home seems to be the perfect spot to include Matt Murdock since Peter is in need of a lawyer, but this could just as easily be a way to introduce Jennifer Walters (She-Hulk) ahead of her Disney+ show. It's too early to know Marvel's plans, but hopefully, Spider-Man: No Way Home embraces this specific fan theory and brings a long-awaited rumor to fruition
