Director James Wan provides an explanation for Aquaman's new stealth suit in Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. The sequel to the successful 2018 film will see Jason Momoa return as Arthur Curry, aka Aquaman, alongside Amber Heard as Mera and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Black Manta. Principal photography began on the film in June 2021, with the film targeting a December 2022 release date.

Following in superhero movie tradition, the sequel to the film will feature the character in a brand new suit. Unlike Spider-Man: No Way Home, where the first look at the new costumes was unveiled in toy leaks and promotional artwork, the stars and producers have gotten out ahead and released official first images. Jason Momoa offered fans their first look at the sequel in a post on his Instagram, showcasing the classic orange and green armor he wore in the first film, as well as a brand new black and blue suit.

Wan took to Instagram to offer an explanation behind the suit. He explains that the suit is titled the stealth suit and is made up of Atlantian tech based on a cephalopod's ability to camouflage. Screenwriter David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick and Wan were inspired by the 'blue suit' from the 80's comic.

The blue suit Wan is drawing from was introduced in 1986's four-issue miniseries by Neal Pozner. The costume was dubbed the camouflage suit and meant to blend in with the ocean. Similar to the Kingdom Come inspiring the Golden Eagle armor in Wonder Woman 1984 and the Superman's black suit from the comics being adapted into Zack Snyder's Justice League, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom is delving into the characters rich comic book history to create new exciting looks while mixing it within the character's cultural background.

The introduction of the blue suit from the comics suggests the film will be exploring more of Aquaman mythology and history from the comics. The 2018 film drew heavily from the New 52 run on the character, but the sequel could expand from the rich history of the character. The run in the comics that introduced the blue suit also delved more into Atlantian mythology and magic and could set up the introduction of Aquaman's sidekick Aqualad. This could lead to the introduction to either Garth, who uses Atlantian sorcery, or Kaldur'ahm who is the son of Black Manta. Audiences will get their first look at Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom in October at DC FanDome, which could show off more images from the set, more cast announcements, and even possibly footage of the film.
