At long last, Christopher McQuarrie’s Mission: Impossible 7 has finished filming. The seventh installment in the extremely popular action-spy franchise has had more than its share of setbacks on the road to completion, with scandal and controversy causing some to believe that the entire production was a doomed affair. However, lead star Tom Cruise and McQuarrie have managed to keep everything together to the end.

The last time that agent Ethan Hunt (Cruise) and his group of IMF operatives were tasked with saving the world was in 2018 with Mission: Impossible – Fallout. Since then, fans have been consistently teased with the idea of the franchise’s return, as well as a back-to-back filming of Mission: Impossible 7 & 8. The idea that two installments could be filmed together gave way too much conjecture regarding what sort of relation the films could have with one another. Unfortunately, the plan to shoot both Mission: Impossible films back to back was abandoned earlier this year, thanks to conflict with Cruise’s schedule for promoting his upcoming sequel, Top Gun: Maverick. As a result, Mission: Impossible 8 is now slated to release in 2023, with Mission: Impossible 7 due to arrive in theatres next September. Hopefully these dates won’t have to undergo any further changes.

For what’s felt like ages to fans, Mission: Impossible 7 has been filming throughout numerous locations around the world. Now thanks to official confirmation from McQuarrie’s Instagram account, filming has at long last come to a close. Calling his cast and crew “the best in the world,” McQuarrie posted a heartfelt message that accompanies a black and white photo of himself and Cruise seated atop what appears to be an overturned train car. Check out the photo below as well as McQuarrie’s message:

Exactly where Mission:Impossible 7 will take viewers in terms of story remains largely unknown. The production has remained highly secretive despite everything that’s taken place with regard to setbacks and controversies. But one aspect of the film that can already be guaranteed is that Cruise will once again blow audiences away with some extremely risky stunt work. The inclusion of death-defying stunts has become a Mission: Impossible staple, so much so that it’s arguably now necessary for Cruise to risk his life in order to get audiences coming back for more. This isn’t to say that the series is lacking in other avenues, only that Cruise’s willingness to push himself elevates not just his work, but that of the entire crew.

Despite the secrecy surrounding the movie, challenges faced during Mission: Impossible 7's exhaustive production will hopefully add to the end product rather than take away from it. Challenging and unexpected moments can often result in new ways of doing things or getting things done, and in this way, there’s been plenty of opportunities for the film. Whatever happens, completing a film of this magnitude is always an impressive feat and McQuarrie’s thanks to his cast and crew definitely underlie that fact.
