Colin Farrell's character from The Batman may be getting a spinoff show on HBO Max. Farrell is set to play Oswald Cobblepot aka Penguin in the upcoming Matt Reeves directed film. Robert Pattinson is taking on the role of Bruce Wayne in the upcoming film, which will track the Dark Knight's early years of crime fighting in Gotham. This will see him run into iconic figures like Zoë Kravitz's Selina Kyle aka Catwoman, Paul Dano's Riddler, and a slew of other Gotham regulars. Jeffrey Wright is set to play Commissioner Jim Gordon and Andy Serkis will star as Alfred. Barry Keoghan, John Turturro, and Peter Sarsgaard will also appear.

The Batman is already getting one spinoff show centered around the Gotham Police Department. Although little is known about that series, titled Gotham PD, Reeves did confirm that the series will focus on Jim Gordon, as well as a corrupt officer on the force. The Batman itself is one of DC's most anticipated upcoming films thanks to a few factors - most notable, though, is the fact that it doesn't take place within the main continuity of the DCEU timeline, giving Reeves and co. plenty of room to craft their own unique world. Now, a new report indicates that that world may be getting even bigger.

Variety reports that a spinoff show centered around Farrell's Penguin is in the early stages of development at HBO Max. The series would follow Penguin's rise to power in Gotham. Sources say that Farrell has been approached to reprise the role he will originate in The Batman, but a deal has not been set. Although the project is in the early stages of development, HBO Max does have screenwriter Lauren LeFranc attached to pen the scripts.

Warner Bros. is clearly very confident in their upcoming Batman movie. Right now, the status of the character in the main DCEU is unclear - with Affleck out of the role (save for his appearance in 2022's The Flash), one of DC's most iconic characters is a lingering question mark for the franchise. Pattinson may be filling that role and it seems that WB may be looking to flesh out his version of Bruce Wayne with his own cinematic universe that may or may not be associated with the DCEU at large. Either way, it looks like there's plenty of Batman content coming in the next few years.

With The Flash potentially opening the DCEU's multiverse, it's entirely possible that Pattinson's Batman could be integrated into the main timeline. Still, there's a long way to go until that happens, giving WB plenty of time to invest in Pattinson's version of the character and the rest of the ensemble set to be introduced in 2022. While it's unclear how big of a role Farrell's Penguin will have in The Batman, a series would certainly give the character a chance to shine, building up one of Gotham's most notorious villains before he once again runs into the Caped Crusader.
