Ask PC gamers what the most significant game ever released is and many will respond with Half-Life 2, the follow-up to Valve’s platform-defining FPS game. Half-Life 2 was a technical marvel when it was released, dramatically changing what games thought to do with physics and storytelling. For those longing to experience it again, there’s new hope for a remastered version of the game – to a degree.

The internet’s been buzzing about a supposed Nvidia GeForce Now leak that, if it’s to be believed, has revealed dozens of games and PC ports earlier than anticipated. While some of these games are dubious at best – with Modern Warfare 3 Campaign Remastered being categorically denied by Activision despite showing up in the leak – others seem possible, if not likely. Half-Life 2 Remastered is one of the games mentioned in the leak, and that has fans hoping for something big.

Obviously, the news should be taken with a grain of salt. While some insiders have pointed to the leak being true, The red flags here raise some serious question marks. It’s possible that only some of the entries are legitimate, and Half-Life 2 Remastered is an example of one that could truly go either way. Though, given the game’s significance, it’s certainly something that could have a big impact on the industry.

The question is how Valve would approach a Half-Life 2 remaster in the first place. A fan-made remaster of Half-Life called Black Mesa would be an excellent blueprint, and with the Steam Deck releasing in the coming months, Half-Life 2 Remastered could even be considered a system-seller for the new hardware. Between the new hardware and Half-Life Alyx’s release last year, Valve does seem to be getting more ambitious with its product lineup outside of Steam itself.

That ambitiousness could be an indicator that Half-Life 2 Remastered is coming, and after years of waiting, fans will undoubtedly see a Half-Life 2 remaster as a precursor to Half-Life 3 – if the remaster is real. It’s a bit muddy at the moment, but the game would have massive implications for Valve’s future if it shakes out how fans are hoping. The unfortunate truth, though, is that it’s still too early to tell if that will be the case.

With the cat now halfway out of the bag, perhaps Valve fans will get some sort of showcase to highlight the Steam Deck and new games that Valve has in the oven. It certainly doesn’t seem out of the question, and with the transition to new hardware, Valve would be hard-pressed to find a better time for big reveals.

Half-Life 2 is available now on PC. A remaster is rumored to be in development.
