Actor Frank Grillo says he'd love to do more with the character of Crossbones for Marvel. Grillo played Brock Rumlow/Crossbones in two Captain America films, Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Captain America: Civil War. Once part of Captain America's Strike Team, it was revealed that Rumlow was one of the many Hydra plants working within S.H.I.E.L.D. He appeared as Crossbones in full costume in Civil War, helping to trigger the event that would lead to the Sokovia accords and ultimately leading to his demise.

Recently, Grillo re-appeared as Rumlow in Avengers: Endgame, where he was seen showing up at the end of the Battle of New York to help retrieve Loki's scepter. Due to the time travel aspect of the scene, Rumlow was still alive at the time, so Grillo was able to reprise the role without addressing his character's death in Civil War. Grillo most recently returned to voice Rumlow again in an episode of Marvel's animated series What If...? on Disney+, and it's rumored he may appear in more than one episode.

In an interview with The Beard and The Bald Movie Podcast, Grillo said that he'd still love to do more with Crossbones in a future Marvel project, saying he thinks it's a cool character and one he'd like to play again before he's "too old and ridiculous" to do so. Grillo also brings up the popularity of Crossbones with fans, saying that he can stand side-by-side with Captain America in that regard. Grillo said he hopes he'll be the one to reprise the role if he's ever written into a future MCU project but imagines he'd be brought back regardless due to the character's popularity. Here's the full quote:

"I gotta tell you, I’m grateful for it, first of all. It’s kind of a testament to the power of Marvel. I’m in two movies, basically, two Captain America movies. Crossbones is only in one of those movies, right? And, you would think that, I mean, I was side-by-side with Captain America in the public’s eye. Like, they don’t see it that way. I love that they keep this alive in some way, shape or form.

I would absolutely be head over heels to get a call and say, ‘we have written Crossbones into such-and-such’. I would love-before I’m too old and ridiculous, I’d love to go do a little bit more with Crossbones, because I thought it was a cool character.  And Crossbones is very popular and [the fans] are very vocal about it. So, Kevin Feige, who’s the smartest guy on the planet-who knows, hopefully it’ll be me, but I imagine somewhere down the line, how do you not bring this guy back?"

Grillo continues to be one of the hardest working people in Hollywood, churning out multiple films per year. His latest film is Joe Carnahan's Cop Shop with Gerard Butler, and he also announced that he'd be starring in a Sylvester-Stallone directed series adaptation of Stallone's 1981 film Nighthawks. Grillo has made a name for himself as a heavy or hero in several action films over the past two decades, with notable performances in The Purge film series and the massively popular show Kingdom.

Crossbones is one of Captain America's most common enemies in the comics. Many felt that his demise in Civil War was premature given the character's popularity and long history with his patriotic adversary. Grillo embodied the tough ruthlessness of Rumlow/Crossbones exceptionally. The fact that he continues to return to the MCU as the character even after his death shows true dedication to the role. With Marvel now playing with the multiverse and overall timeline of the MCU, it no longer feels implausible that Grillo could suit back up as Crossbones in some form or another, potentially even finding his way into Captain America 4 with Anthony Mackie or another Captain America themed project in the future. Either way, Grillo is ready to return to the role.
