A funny edit of a pivotal Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings scene gives Simu Liu some epic 1980s hair. Marvel's latest cinematic effort arrived in theaters just three weekends ago, and it has already become a bona fide sensation. After months of hand-wringing over the state of the moviegoing industry, Shang-Chi has helped ease concerns with its impressive box office performance. It broke Labor Day records in its opening weekend and is now on track to become the highest-grossing movie of the year, which would put it ahead of fellow Marvel effort Black Widow.

Shang-Chi stars Liu as the titular hero, a skilled fighter who was trained by his father (Tony Leung's Ten Rings leader Wenwu) to be an assassin. Years before the movie begins, Shang-Chi ran away to start a new life for himself in America. However, Wenwu wants to reunite his family, forcing Shang-Chi to return to the Ten Rings organization and confront his past. Beyond Liu, Shang-Chi stars Awkwafina, Benedict Wong, Fala Chen, Meng'er Zhang, Ben Kingsley, and Michelle Yeoh.

Since Shang-Chi's release, fans have had a lot of fun messing with Liu's stock photo past. However, the latest edit for the movie takes a page from another ongoing MCU project... in a way. Shared online by PlTBULL, the Shang-Chi image considers what the movie would've looked like if it took place in the 1980s. As in, What If...? it had a different place in the timeline. The answer? Liu would have some epic hair. Check it out below.

Shang-Chi actually takes place in the MCU's present day, which is roughly 2023-2024. It's set after the events of Avengers: Endgame, a movie that shifted the entire franchise's timeline up by five years. Though the film attempts to have it all make sense, Shang-Chi complicates the MCU timeline somewhat because of its flashbacks to the 90s. Nevertheless, it isn't set anywhere near the 80s, thus depriving Liu of sporting a retro hairstyle.

Interestingly, despite pop culture's current fascination with the 1980s, the MCU has yet to really delve into that era. The opening of Ant-Man takes viewers back to 1989, but it's very brief. It's rare that the MCU opts to go back in time rather than forward, though it has happened before (Captain Marvel, Black Widow). In the future, perhaps the franchise will decide to introduce a hero in the 1980s. One thing is clear: It won't be Shang-Chi, since his story lies in the future. There will be much more of him ahead in the MCU, and fans can't wait to see what comes next.
