It's an exciting time to be a Minecraft fan. Not only is Minecraft in between the two releases making up its Caves & Cliffs update, the most exciting update for Minecraft in a very long time, but Minecraft Dungeons has expanded the franchise in a way that's set an awesome new precedent. It's opened up the possibility of new Minecraft games that explore and experiment with entirely different ideas and genres. It's no surprise then that Minecraft fans' imaginations are running wild with some fun pieces of concept art Mojang has been sharing on social media.

The official Minecraft Instagram page is full of handcrafted Minecraft-related art. Most of it looks pulled from Minecraft itself, though it's been spruced up to look cinematic. However, there's also a different style of Minecraft art that's also frequently shared. It's pixel art, largely in a 2D or isometric style, that looks as if it's been pulled from multiple completely different games. While there's no indication that Mojang is planning such games, Minecraft fans are beginning to wonder if there's more to the art than meets the eye.

One frequently posted style should be recognizable even to more casual Minecraft fans. It's a 2D art style that's been used for some fun animations during recent MineCon Live presentations, with little animated figures Jens Bergensten and Agnes Larsson. This style looks like a Super Mario World conversion of Minecraft.

A more recent style of art that's been posted shows an even more retro version of this, more akin to Ghosts 'n Goblins or the original Super Mario Bros. Rather than be just a 2D sidescrolling platformer, however, the art shows a proper de-make of Minecraft in 2D with an open world to explore and all of the crafting mining expected of Minecraft. It's perhaps most comparable in style to Terraria or Starbound.

Again, Mojang hasn't announced any such games and there's no indication that a 2D Minecraft is in development. It's not like there aren't other styles of art posted to the Minecraft Instagram account either, like a Pokemon style of Minecraft or a top-down RPG. Of course, that top-down RPG art did get shared before the announcement of Minecraft Dungeons, but that could be beside the point.

Even if Mojang isn't making a Terraria-type Minecraft game, though, that doesn't mean there aren't other Minecraft projects currently in development. In fact, a leak from the past week hints Mojang has two new Minecraft games in development that are based on Minecraft but not tied to Minecraft or Minecraft Dungeons. Fans will just have to be patient to find out what Mojang might have in store.

Minecraft is available now on PC, PS4, Switch, Xbox One, and mobile devices.
