Sam Raimi's cult classic horror movie The Evil Dead is returning to theaters 40 years after it premiered in 1981. In it, a group of friends led by Ash Williams (Bruce Campbell) travels to a remote cabin in the woods, where they accidentally resurrect an ancient demonic force. The independent film's initial success gave birth to an ongoing franchise of movies and TV shows, the latest of which, Evil Dead Rise, will stream on HBO Max next year.

Fathom Events has announced that The Evil Dead will be screened in movie theaters across the country in celebration of the film's 40th anniversary. The movie will run for one night only on October 7 at 7:30 p.m. local time. Grindhouse Releasing and Fathom Events are jointly responsible for the event, which includes an exclusive introduction from Bruce Campbell. Tickets can be purchased at Fathom Events' website or from participating theaters.

In the 40 years since The Evil Dead premiered, Campbell has remained the iconic face of the franchise, along with the decidedly less pleasant faces of the Deadites. Fans have grown up along with him as the series developed, so it's only fitting that he introduce the anniversary screening. Presumably, the exclusive introduction will only be made available to theatergoers, at least for now, which may be enough of a draw for diehard franchise fans to turn out.

Here's Fathom Events' refresher on the perils that befall The Evil Dead's isolated travelers: "Ash (Campbell), his girlfriend Linda (Betsy Baker), his sister Cheryl (Ellen Sandweiss), and couple Scotty (Hal Delrich) and Shelly (Sarah York), drive to a remote cabin in the woods for a fun getaway. While there, they find the Necronomicon Ex-Mortis (aka "The Book of the Dead"), an ancient tome whose text reawakens the dead when read out loud. After unintentionally releasing a flood of evil, the five friends must fight for their lives or become possessed."
