Director Andy Serkis has revealed that Venom: Let There Be Carnage is going to be all about the relationship between Eddie Brock and the symbiote. And while that may seem like a no-brainer for fans of the character, it looks like Serkis and company have come up with a new twist on the duo for the film. The question, as always, is how that is going to play with audiences going to see the sequel.

In the comics, the symbiote was an alien entity who originally bonded with Peter Parker (a.k.a. Spider-Man) before finding Eddie Brock. Their shared hatred for Spider-Man initially bonded them together but, eventually, they form a partnership that leads them to become the anti-hero Venom. But with Spider-Man not appearing in Venom or Venom: Let There Be Carnage, the filmmakers focused on the relationship between Eddie Brock and the symbiote instead.

In a new interview with Uproxx, Serkis stated that Venom: Let There Be Carnage is all about the love affair between Eddie and the symbiote. When asked specifically about their relationship, Serkis said, “Absolutely they do love each other and that’s the kind of the center of the movie is that love affair...” He went on to talk about a scene that clarifies that love a bit, with Serkis explaining:

”Well, Tom [Hardy] and [co-writer] Kelly [Marcel] were always about Venom coming out and going to a party that was a very sort of an LGBTQIA kind of festival, really, I’d call it, and so this is his coming out party basically. This is Venom’s coming-out party."

With rumors from those who’ve seen the movie saying the symbiote and Eddie spend most of the film bickering, as well as a “break-up” scene proceeding the party, the meaning here seems pretty clear. The film is portraying the relationship between Eddie and the symbiote as a true partnership/love story, which is a fresh take on the Venom character. And one that will be very interesting to see on screen, especially when they are forced to take on the likes of Carnage.

The idea might be a bit of a gamble for the film, but Venom: Let There Be Carnage was already taking risks, both with their use of the ultra-violent Carnage and with their continued omittance of Spider-Man from Venom’s origins. This seems like a move that could pay off well for the filmmakers and add new dimensions to the anti-hero that could even make its way into the pages of the comics in the future.
