Kevin Smith recently explained the reason why he wouldn't helm a Marvel movie. Smith’s resume might suggest otherwise; he has directed thirteen feature films since 1994, when his first film Clerks was released, and acted as the screenwriter for all but one of them. He has also created and executive produced a number of television shows, including Clerks: The Animated Series and his latest, the 2016 talk show, Geeking Out. For his work, Smith has received critical acclaim as well as a devoted fan base of his cult “View Askewniverse” canon.

A longtime comic book fan, comics frequently factor into Smith’s films. In Mallrats, Smith’s follow-up to Clerks, Jason Lee’s Brodie is obsessed with Marvel characters—particularly their sexual proclivities—and shares a scene with Stan Lee. His next film, Chasing Amy, follows a comic book writer who meets and falls in love with a fellow comic book writer. The fictional comic in Chasing Amy, “Bluntman and Chronic,” would reappear in subsequent Smith films and even resulted in a real-life comic written by Smith himself.

In an interview with Uproxx, Smith confirms that, despite being an ideal candidate, he would not direct a Marvel film. Smith’s decision, it should be noted, doesn’t come from a distaste for Marvel movies. Conversely, Smith claims that he’s a huge fan, calling the franchise “brilliant” and “fantastic.” “They’re my favorite form of entertainment,” Smith says before shouting out the President of Marvel Studios. “Kevin Feige is my favorite living American filmmaker right now.” In a self-effacing response, Smith blames his reluctance on his own lack of the correct sort of “visual style” as a filmmaker. He also says he prefers to “create [his] own stories.” Check out Smith’s full quote below:

"We live in this era now where it’s like, I should be romping from comic book movie to comic book movie. I’ve been talking about this shit since the '90s, so I should be out there doing it, but number one, I’m not that talented. Not talented enough to pull off comic book movies. You need visual style to do that sort of thing. I don’t think visually. I think in words. Even my favorite comic books have more words than pictures in them and stuff like that. Number two, it’s more satisfying for me to create my own stories. As much as I love the Marvel Cinematic Universe… Part of the reason I love those movies so much… it’s breathtaking how they take the stories I knew as a kid and bring them to life now as movies. I don’t have that kind of ability."

Though he might not be helming a Marvel project anytime soon, that’s not to say that Smith hasn’t dabbled in comic book-centric projects. Smith has penned a number of comics of his own, some within the View Askewniverse, others that feature Batman, Daredevil, Green Arrow, and Green Hornet. He even owns a comic book store in Red Bank, New Jersey, called Jay and Silent Bob’s Secret Stash. The store became the setting for his reality series, Comic Book Men, which aired from 2012 to 2018
