Two new images from Ghostbusters: Afterlife reveal a new look at the Slimer-like ghost Muncher and a new look at the young cast. Ghostbusters: Afterlife is the fourth entry in the Ghostbusters franchise and the closest thing to a sequel since Ghostbusters II, which was released in 1989. Picking up thirty years after the events of that film, the new entry features a younger cast picking up the Proton Packs and heading out to bust some ghosts, including Finn Wolfhard, Mckenna Grace, Logan Kim and Celeste O'Connor, as well as new adult members of the cast, including Paul Rudd and Carrie Coon.

The original cast is expected to make an appearance as well, although how they factor into the plot is still a mystery (except to those who saw the film at CinemaCon earlier this year). Another famous "cast member" from the original films was Slimer, the green, funny-looking ghost blob that quickly became a fan favorite (and helped coin the term "he slimed me") and featured prominently in the animated series. While there have been teases of Slimer appearing in Ghostbusters: Afterlife, it's unclear if he will actually show up in the movie, even if he already did in the 2016 hard reboot directed by Paul Feig.

Today, Empire released two new images from the film, including a look at the ghost Muncher, who looks remarkably like Slimer himself. The fat, green, toothy glob of ghost is sure to grab audiences' attention, as well as the young cast, who are also featured in a new image. The images were part of a reveal for the outlet, which is planning to drop an interview with original director Ivan Reitman and his son, Jason Reitman, who is helming this incarnation. When asked about his son directing the film, Reitman said, “I was amazed that he wanted to do it. He really had his own direction. He worked for years to establish his kind of filmmaking and his own distinctive talent, and then he wanted to jump into this, something that was so famous already.”

The younger director, who has made a name for himself with films like Juno, Up In The Air, and Young Adult, was apprehensive, but keen on carrying the torch that his father lit, saying: "For me, it’s this idea of making a movie for my father, that carries on a legacy that was introduced to me when I was seven years old and was a deep part of my childhood, the way it was a part of everybody’s childhood." Reitman's last film was the biopic The Front Runner, starring Hugh Jackman. Meanwhile, Ivan's next project looks to be a sequel to his 1988 hit Twins, which starred Arnold Schwarzenegger and Danny DeVito. The sequel will be called Triplets and the original stars are expected to return, adding Tracy Morgan as the third sibling.

The allure of returning to the world of Ghostbusters is steeped in nostalgia and seeing Slimer (or a ghost that looks like Slimer) can sometimes be enough to entice you back into it. For a franchise called Ghostbusters, it's amazing how secondary they are to the films' real subject, the Ghostbusters themselves. It was always the characters that made the franchise great, especially the original cast of Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis, and Ernie Hudson. The new cast is a solid bunch of up-and-comers and hopefully they can build something fresh and new on the back of the original cast's legacy while still bringing back some spooky favorites and even spookier new ghosts. Ghostbusters: Afterlife opens on November 19th, 2o21.
