Donald Sutherland and Jaeden Martell will star in the film adaptation of Stephen King’s Mr. Harrigan’s Phone. Last year, Blumhouse and Ryan Murphy announced they were teaming up with Netflix to adapt King’s short story, Mr. Harrigan’s Phone, for the small screen. Derived from King’s four-part novella collection If It Bleeds, Mr. Harrigan’s Phone is the first tale in the best-selling series.

Per THR, Mr. Harrigan’s Phone has cast Sutherland (The Hunger Games) as Harrigan and Martell (King’s It) as Craig. Written and directed by John Lee Hancock, the film adaptation is expected to debut in 2022. Sutherland’s career has spanned five decades, and he was recently seen in HBO’s The Undoing. Martell, who portrayed Bill Dengrough in King's It, is next set to star in the upcoming reboot of The Lost Boys.

Noted by readers as reflecting the same tones as King’s Stand by Me, Mr. Harrigan’s Phone follows Craig, a young boy who is hired by Mr. Harrigan, an elderly billionaire who has retired in a small-town neighborhood. After years of companionship, Craig purchases an iPhone for Mr. Harrigan. Shortly after Mr. Harrigan’s death, Craig arranges for the phone, along with a final voicemail, to be buried in his old friend’s pocket. In a chilling turn of events, Craig receives a message in return and discovers that not everything dead is gone.

As it stands, the number of King’s novels getting the adaptation treatment shows no signs of slowing down. Under the guidance of Blumhouse and Murphy, Mr. Harrigan’s Phone is finally moving forward with the casting choices of Sutherland and Martell.  Mr. Harrigan’s Phone is set to release on Netflix in 2022.
