Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings star, Simu Liu, shares a behind-the-scenes video of himself performing an impressive backflip. Liu plays Marvel’s Master of Kung Fu in the 25th film to take place within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Shang-Chi follows its titular character as he’s forced to return home and confront his very misguided father: the leader of the Ten Rings, Wenwu (Tony Leung). Alongside Leung and Liu is a star-studded and predominately Asian and Asian-American cast including Awkwafina, Michelle Yeoh, Benedict Wong, Fala Chen, and Meng'er Zhang. Since its release in September, the movie has grossed over $386 million worldwide and has broken box office records.

Director Destin Daniel Cretton’s Shang-Chi has been praised for its performances, representation, impressive action sequences, and fight choreography. The latter of which is made even more impressive thanks to Liu, who has a background in gymnastics and did the majority of his own stunts and fight scenes in a film that pays homage to classic martial arts movies. The 32-year-old actor trained with the stunt crew in order to convincingly perform his own moves—fans would be forgiven for thinking he had an extensive background in martial arts. Shang-Chi's biggest action sequences, including the now-iconic bus sequence and the showdown with Wenwu, (while aided by CGI) all revolve around Liu’s performance both physically and emotionally.

Simu Liu took to Instagram to share a behind-the-scenes video from Shang-Chi that shows himself on set for the portions of the film taking place Ta Lo. The video shows the actor doing an impressive backflip that “for some reason did not make the movie.” Check it out below:

Liu has revealed a horde of behind-the-scenes looks at Shang-Chi since its release, also sharing peeks of his work on the bus sequence and his character’s final fight with Wenwu. The above video is obviously just Liu having some fun, but it certainly exemplifies “superhero shape.” Liu is more than believable as Marvel’s Master of Kung Fu as every punch and kick has a purpose and feels real, which is one of the many reasons Shang-Chi is now considered to be one of the MCU’s greatest origin stories and highest-grossing movies of 2021 (thus far).

It’s been a long road for Liu since tweeting about his desire to play Shang-Chi back in 2018, and all of his hard work has paid off. Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings’ main character appears to be an Avenger and should play a prominent role in the MCU moving forward. The film’s DVD and Blu-ray release date is estimated for November, at which point fans will get an even more expansive look at the making of one of the biggest films of the year.
