New World Server Transfers Pushed Back, Amazon Goes Back on Certain Promises

The week of New World's launch saw servers overwhelmed by hundreds of thousands of players. Due to servers filling and queue times ever-growing, developer Amazon told players they should create characters on open servers and that server transfers would be provided quickly. Unfortunately, New World server transfers did not arrive that week. Nor will they arrive this week, Amazon has now confirmed. Amazon hopes to provide New World server transfers next week instead, though they now come with serious limitations on their usage.

In a post shared on the official New World forums, community manager TrevzorFTW explains that Amazon has delayed its plans to implement server transfers. Development continues on the feature, but TrevzorFTW explains that it has discovered "some edge cases" that didn't meet the team's standards. As such, Amazon is taking additional time in order to solve these problems before it releases New World's server transfer system to the public. The current schedule tentatively plans for server transfers to be available next week.

For the time being, Amazon has provided a FAQ of sorts that gives information regarding the server transfer process. It is disappointingly limited compared to initial plans. For one, Amazon is no longer planning on offering a free New World server transfer window of two weeks. Instead, Amazon will provide each player with a single free server transfer token. Once it's used, players will have to pay if they want to transfer servers again.

Further, Amazon has confirmed that it will not be allowing server transfers to a "full world." For the past week, Amazon has flagged many New World servers as full so they no longer accept new characters - even if those servers are often well below the server cap. It does seem that many servers have once again been opened, however. Players are certain to be frustrated, as they'll be blocked from transferring to any server of import. Only low-population servers will be open, and this goes against Amazon's initial promise on server transfers.

Another key broken promise is that server transfers will not be allowed across regions. Amazon says players will only be able to transfer between servers within their own region. That means players hoping to transfer between US West and US East won't be able to. Transfers between EU and North America, as well as APAC and South America servers, will also be blocked.

Suffice to say, Amazon has a true fiasco on its hands. New World players were content to wait so long as they got the server transfer options they were promised. Now, however, the delays have only compounded the issue. After investing weeks of playtime into their characters, in many cases, players will no longer be able to join their friends. While technical limitations are understandable, New World players are more than justified in asking how things have gone so wrong.

New World is available now on PC.
