Squid Game creator Hwang Dong-hyuk has revealed which plotlines he’d like to explore in a hypothetical season 2 at Netflix. After taking the world by storm and becoming Netflix’s biggest original series ever, Squid Game season 2 seems like an inevitability. Season 1 leaves plenty of story threads hanging for further exploration, creating many different possibilities for where Squid Game season 2 could go.

Neither Hwang nor Netflix could have possibly anticipated Squid Game becoming so popular globally, and the idea of a Squid Game season 2 seems to have only come up in the wake of the show’s success. Hwang has said that he intended for the end of Squid Game season 1 to be fully functional as the end of the story, with some storylines intentionally left unresolved. But now that the show has smashed records around the world, Netflix will surely want to keep the Squid Game story going.

In a recent interview with THR, Hwang discussed the success of Squid Game and what he’d like to explore in season 2. He said that one of the main plotlines he’d like to return to is the relationship between detective Hwang Jun-ho and his brother Hwang In-ho, who is revealed at the end of season 1 to be the Squid Game Front Man. He also said he’d be interested in exploring more about the recruiter who finds Gi-hun, and in returning to Gi-hun’s own story as he contends with the organization behind the games. Read Hwang’s full quote below.

“So I thought that might be a good simple, but ambiguous, way to end the story for Gi-hun. But there are some other stories in the series that have not been addressed. For example, the story of the police officer and the story of his brother, The Front Man. So if I end up creating season two, I’d like to explore that storyline — what is going on between those two brothers? And then I could also go into the story of that recruiter in the suit who plays the game of ddakji with Gi-hun and gives him the card in the first episode. And, of course, we could go with Gi-hun’s story as he turns back, and explore more about how he’s going to navigate through his reckoning with the people who are designing the games. So, I don’t know yet, but I’ll just say there are a lot of possibilities out there for season two storylines.”

Any or all of the three plotlines mentioned by Hwang would be great to see explored in Squid Game season 2. The obvious choice would be to continue following Gi-hun, as he has been the primary protagonist so far, but a heavier focus on the shadowy organization could be a fun change. Many viewers have theorized that Jun-ho is still alive, and with In-ho now likely running the games after the death of the founder, there relationship could get even more interesting.

Following the Squid Game recruiter would perhaps be the least obvious direction for Squid Game season 2 to take, but that doesn’t mean the idea doesn’t have promise. Following the recruiter could be the perfect way to reveal new things about the nature of the games and the people behind them. Building out the biggest parts of the Squid Game story that have yet to be revealed. It may be some time before Squid Game season 2 actually hits Netflix, but it sounds like Hwang has plenty of great ideas for when it does.
