Loki Star Jonathan Majors Took Role Without Knowing Kang's Full MCU Arc

Loki star Jonathan Majors says he signed on to play Kang the Conqueror without knowing Marvel's full plans for the character in the MCU.

Loki star Jonathan Majors agreed to play the Marvel Cinematic Universe's iteration of Kang the Conqueror without knowing the studio's full plans for the character. The actor has made quite the name for himself over the last few years following an incredible series of performances ranging from his work as Montgomery Allen in 2019's The Last Black Man in San Francisco, to starring as Atticus Freeman in HBO's Lovecraft Country, and playing the role of David in Spike Lee's Da 5 Bloods. Now, Majors has his eyes set on the iconic Marvel villain Kang the Conqueror.

Majors was first announced as the time-traveling supervillain Kang late last year, as the character was confirmed to appear in the upcoming Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania from director Peyton Reed. However, Majors surprised Marvel fans this summer by making an unexpected appearance as "He Who Remains," a Kang variant living in the Citadel at the End of Time, in the season finale of the Loki Disney+ series. The Loki finale established Kang as an imminent and significant threat in the MCU, which has left fans eagerly speculating as to when and where Kang could appear again outside of the third Ant-Man film. As for Marvel's overall plans with the character, even Majors himself is curious.

In a recent interview with Collider, Majors confirmed that he accepted the role without knowing what Marvel's ultimate roadmap for the Avengers villain is. He said that he approached the offer to play Kang just as he would any other role and that he considered the significance and the purpose Kang would serve before ultimately agreeing to take on the character. "Well I knew everything that everyone else knew, you know, and still do actually. Where it's like this is the role, and this is where we're starting. That's as far as we got. And that was enough for me to try to understand who this character was. When I looked at the significance of Kang in the MCU, I agreed to the role in the same way I agree to any other film that I do. What is the responsibility of the character? Can the world move forward without them? Can the scene move forward without them? And if it can then I'm okay. And if it can't then it's something that I want to take on and take that responsibility." 

 

Though Majors' comments don't reveal any juicy new details about when fans might see Kang again, he does confirm that the character will not be playing a small role in the MCU. His comments suggest that Kang will be a pivotal character to the Marvel universe moving forward, as he says that he would pass on any role that the world could easily move forward without. Following his surprise appearance at the end of Loki, it seems that Kang could be being set up as the next Thanos-level threat to the MCU, which would certainly meet the criteria Majors lays out here.

Looking ahead at Marvel's full slate, Kang's only other confirmed appearance is in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, which is scheduled to release in July of 2023. It can also be assumed that the character will appear in the second season of Loki, as the first season ends on a cliffhanger showing Kang's takeover of the Time Variance Authority. Though Disney has not confirmed a release date for the second season (fingers crossed they will this Friday for Disney+ day), it is expected to hit Disney+ sometime in 2023. As for where else Kang might appear, audiences will just have to wait and see.
