Dracula, with all his power, could easily defeat the vampire hunter Blade, but has chosen not to--and a new comic offers insight into why.

Warning: contains spoilers for Darkhold: Blade #1!

Vampires are a growing presence in the Marvel Universe, creating their own nation with the vampire lord Dracula leading the charge. However, Blade has appointed himself a watchdog over Dracula and the Vampire Nation, a move that will put him in the vampire’s crosshairs. Dracula is the most powerful vampire on Earth, leading to the question: why does Dracula not up and kill Blade? The answer may lie in a twisted vision imparted to Blade by the Darkhold in Blade: Darkhold #1, on sale now in print and digital.

Vampires arrived in the Marvel Universe in 1972’s Tomb of Dracula #1, and the vampire hunter Blade arrived not long after. A daywalker with all the powers of a vampire but none of their weaknesses, Blade has waged a one-man war on vampires, eliminating them without mercy. As a consequence of Blade’s crusade, Dracula is a sworn enemy. Dracula is also one of the most powerful vampires on Earth, with a vast array of resources at his disposal, not to mention legions of vampires at his command. Blade is but one person, and Dracula could easily end him once and for all if he wished—yet he never has. In light of Blade’s appointment as the UN watchdog for the Vampire Nation, this is a move that may come back to haunt Dracula, but Darkhold: Blade #1, offers some insight into why he has allowed the hero to live. The issue is written by Daniel Kibblesmith, with art by Federico Sabbatini, colors by Rico Renzi, and letters by Clayton Cowles.

Under the Darkhold’s influence, Blade is living in a world overrun by vampires. Interestingly enough, Dracula is only mentioned and never seen; instead, Blade fights against Wilson Fisk, the former Kingpin, now a vampire. Amadeus Cho, also now a vampire, reveals that Fisk could snuff Blade out if he wished, but lets him operate anyway. Fisk’s reasoning is that allowing Blade to operate freelycreates a “boogeyman” that Fisk can use to control the rest of the vampires. As Cho puts it: “indentured servitude for protection.”

The Kingpin’s logic can be applied to Dracula as well. Kingpin and Dracula are both immensely powerful vampires, with almost total control over their armies. Both would be capable of ending Blade’s threat definitively, but they do not; they know that other vampires, motivated by fear, will ally themselves with someone like Kingpin, or Dracula—someone they think will protect them from Blade. Dracula and Kingpin are shrewd and calculating leaders, willing to let a few low-ranking vampires die at Blade’s hands in order to protect their power.

However, in both worlds, Dracula and Kingpin will eventually have to deal with Blade. In Darkhold: Blade, the serum that controls his dark side is losing its effectiveness, leading him to escalate his war against vampires. Blade has become more brutal in his tactics; he eventually will come for higher-ranking vampires, ultimately forcing Kingpin’s hand. In the mainline Marvel Universe, Blade is still waging war against Dracula; the vampire lord's reluctance up to this point to kill Blade may prove to be his undoing. As the Sherriff of the Vampire Nation, Blade now has the backing of the United Nations and the Avengers; if Dracula and the Vampire Nation act out of line, the resistance they get will be much greater—and maybe more than the vampires can handle.

As Earth’s most powerful vampire, Dracula has had many opportunities to end the threat of Blade once and for all. He has chosen not to however, reasoning that Blade helps keep him in power.
