The bus fight scene in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings was partially inspired by Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan, says members of the stunt team.

Real life stuntmen break down how the first fight scene in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings was inspired by action icons Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan. As it stands right now, director Destin Daniel Cretton's Shang-Chi is the highest-grossing movie of 2021 at the domestic box office. The MCU flick arrived exclusively in theaters in early September and quickly broke records on its way to a $224.5 million U.S. total ($418.4 million worldwide). Shang-Chi also has the distinction of being the best-reviewed MCU movie of the year, holding a 92% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Breakout star Simu Liu plays Shang-Chi for the film, which is the first onscreen adaptation of the Marvel Comics character. Shang-Chi is known for his fighting prowess, having been trained by his criminal father Wenwu (Tony Leung) from a young age. The movie wastes no time in highlighting just what Shang-Chi is capable of, giving him a thrilling, close-quarters fight scene early on in its runtime. Many have noted that Shang-Chi's fight sequences have some homages to past action stars; this is especially true in the case of the bus fight.

A new video from the YouTube group Corridor Crew breaks down the various action sequences within Shang-Chi, starting with the very first one. Host Niko sat down with Shang-Chi's action designers Chris Cowan and Yung Lee for the video and dove almost immediately into the bus fight. Talking about the first move, which sees Shang-Chi land a fierce, slow-mo punch on one of Razor Fist's goons, Lee mentioned how it's a clever reference to Bruce Lee. He said he loved the punch "because Shang-Chi's character is so much inspired by Bruce Lee that for the first scene that you see him fighting, that's the first move that he does. It's like perfect homage, storytelling inspiration, but not being a complete rip."

As for how Jackie Chan inspired the fight scene, much has been said about Shang-Chi's impressive jacket move. Both Cowan and Lee agreed it wasn't an exact rip-off of a Chan moment, but that the creative team still drew inspiration from him. In the bus fight, Shang-Chi turns the tables on one of the bad guys when he grabs Shang-Chi's jacket. Spinning quickly, Shang-Chi gets control of the jacket and uses it to fend the guy off.

In the comics, Shang-Chi was partially inspired by Bruce Lee, so it's fitting that he served as inspiration for the fight scenes in this movie. The same can be said for Jackie Chan, who helped pave the way for others in the action genre. Of course, Shang-Chi the movie did a lot to ensure the character could stand on his own as a formidable hero, but it's nice to see shades of those who came before within his moves. Shang-Chi has some of the best action scenes in the entire MCU, and it'll be quite exciting to see how they evolve in future installments. Perhaps these moves will go on to inspire the action heroes of the next generation; that would be the most fitting homage of all.
