Moon Knight's Costumes Are Way Deeper Than You Realize

In Moon Knight, the costumes of Moon Knight and Mister Knight reflect aspects of Marc Spector and Steven Grant, but also hide a secret deeper meaning.

In Marvel’s Disney+ Moon Knight series, the costumes are symbolic but also hide a deeper meaning. It’s common for superhero costumes to contain symbolism in one form or another, and plenty also use color theory. But Moon Knight’s costumes go a step further in how they tie to the content thematically and in doing so they hint at what Jake Lockley’s future Moon Knight costume will be.

In Moon Knight, the alter Marc Spector (Oscar Isaac) is the avatar for the Egyptian god Khonshu, a position that grants him a special suit that can be summoned, and which grants healing powers. The alter Steven Grant (also Oscar Isaac) finds that he can summon his own version of the suit, but his appears as a sleeker, more modern style of suit. While Marc’s suit is definitively gray, Steven’s suit is a near-white shade of gray, representing Steven’s innocence and relative purity in relation to Marc.

While the colors of the two Moon Knight suits bear a fairly obvious connection to the respective alters’ moral standings, they also represent parts of the moon itself. Steven Grant’s Mister Knight outfit is reminiscent of the bright white parts of the moon’s surface, known as the highlands. Meanwhile, Marc Spector’s Moon Knight costume is a mix of grays that represent the lunar maria. Each lunar mare is a dark part of the visible side of the moon – a basaltic plain. Not only are these basaltic plains darker than the highlands, but they are the result of unseen traumatic impacts that take place on the dark side of the moon. This correlation highlights how Marc takes a place between the light and the dark and how he weathers the worst that the world tries to throw at Steven.

What Will Jake Lockley's Moon Knight Costume Be?
Moon Knight Ending Explained Jake Lockley Post Credits
From the symbolism employed for the Moon Knight and Mister Knight costumes for Marc and Steven, it is possible to extrapolate the most likely options for Jake Lockley’s eventual Moon Knight costume. While Khonshu agrees to release Steven and Marc at the end of Moon Knight season 1, the post-credits scene shows that Jake is still working for the god, so it is likely that his costume will be revealed in a future MCU appearance. As far as the moon metaphor goes, Jake represents the dark side of the moon: he is unseen by anyone else and has the darkest (and most violent) personality. Therefore, in stark contrast to Mister Knight’s bright costume, Jake Lockley’s costume will most likely be black.

Jake Lockley’s Moon Knight costume will most likely be black to emulate both his moral standing and the dark side of the moon, but he might have an additional power. In the comics, Moon Knight’s costume is white because he wants to strike fear into his foes and for them to see him coming. Jake Lockley however (at least in the MCU), is likely to go largely unseen and might not only hide in the shadows but might have an ability to allow himself to remain unseen until the right moment as a way to echo the idea of the unseen side of the moon. The black costume would also tie into Marc Spector’s line in the Moon Knight season 1 finale when, after Jake Lockley unexpectedly takes control, he tells Layla that he “blacked out.”

This parallel to lunar geography demonstrates how many layers there are to the Moon Knight costumes that the characters can summon, and yet there is an additional meta-level to the parallel. Many of the lunar maria are named for states of mind, most notably: “The Sea of Crises,” “The Sea of Cleverness,” “The Sea of Serenity,” and “The Sea of Tranquility.” These states of mind tie in neatly with the portrayal of mental health in Moon Knight, and can be seen as echoing the mental journey that Marc and Steven take as they move from struggle and crisis to a point of finding balance by the send of the season.
