A new behind-the-scenes video for Ms. Marvel reveals that casting Iman Vellani was a unanimous decision at Marvel Studios. Announced in 2019, the six-episode miniseries will premiere on Disney+ on June 8. Ms. Marvel will introduce its titular hero to the MCU and set up the character's big screen appearance alongside Carol Danvers (Brie Larson) and Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris) in The Marvels in 2023.

Ms. Marvel follows Kamala Khan, a Pakistani American teenager who discovers her Inhuman genes and begins to follow in the footsteps of her idol, Captain Marvel. In her journey to become a superhero, she also will struggle to balance her life as a Pakistani teen in America. Although Sana Amanat who helped create the character is one of  Ms. Marvel's executive producers, the miniseries will deviate from its comic book inspiration slightly. Instead of Kamala's shapeshifting abilities, the teen superhero will now have the ability to manifest light. In September 2020, newcomer Iman Vellani was cast as Kamala Khan.

While the team behind Ms. Marvel clearly had to make some hard choices while translating the comics to the screen, casting Vellani as Kamala wasn't one of them. Disney tweeted a new video promoting the series that shared a behind-the-scenes look at Marvel Studios' casting decision for Ms. Marvel. In the video, Kevin Feige offered the role of Kamala Khan to a very shocked Vellani, sharing that "it was a unanimous decision".

The new promo highlights the biggest similarity between Vellani and Kamala Khan: they are both huge superhero fans. Amanat sums up how perfectly Vellani fits the role by saying "that girl is Kamala Khan." This is a tremendous vote of confidence from one of the character's co-creator, especially considering Kamala made Marvel history by being the first Muslim hero to headline a series. Now Vellani holds that responsibility in the MCU. Evidently, the team at Marvel Studios has no doubts about Vellani's ability to carry that responsibility since they unanimously chose her for the role. Luckily, Vellani seems thrilled by the opportunity.

Some fans have been wary of Ms. Marvel because the miniseries changed Kamala's powers, but perhaps that opinion will change once the show is released. This behind-the-scenes sneak peek shows that Vellani embodies Kamala's pure enthusiasm which is a core piece of her character. Vellani's portrayal could set up Ms. Marvel to convey the true spirit of the comics while allowing Kamala to move on to greater things in the MCU. Despite Marvel Studios' seemingly unwavering confidence in Vellani's performance, fans will have to wait until Ms. Marvel premieres next month to see what happens.
