Director David Ayer teases how he'd approach the Suicide Squad director's cut. The original theatrical cut released in 2016, a much-hyped addition to the DCEU, with popular comics characters from Deadshot to Killer Croc making their cinematic debuts. The finished film, however, was viewed by many as a disappointment, and despite having cultural influence with its popularization of Joker and Harley Quinn, the movie was critically maligned.

Following the release of Zack Snyder’s Justice League after years of fan campaigning for the filmmaker's original vision to be realised, Ayer has tried to similarly launch his own project. According to him, the problems of Suicide Squad stem from similar studio interference and editing, with Ayer’s version apparently featuring many more Jared Leto Joker scenes and a completely different third-act battle. While Warner Brothers and DC are seemingly ignoring the online momentum for now, fans are continuing their efforts to Release the Ayer Cut.

Now, the director has his say on how he would go about rejigging the film for a director’s cut. Suicide Squad Ayer Cut fan supporters were discussing online whether additional reshoots would be needed for a hypothetical release, as they were for Zack Snyder's Justice League. In a surprise response, Ayer says, “No need for reshoots. Just some VFX work.” The comment implies he has given thought to how an Ayer Cut could work with the existing footage, in a similar way to how additional VFX saw characters like Martian Manhunter and Desaad make their cinematic debut in the Snyder Cut.

Stars and creatives online have had their say on the possibility of the Suicide Squad Ayer Cut as the pressure builds on Warner and DC. Suicide Squad star Scott Eastwood recently spoke out about his expanded scenes left on the cutting room floor. Footage has made its way online in recent months of alternate and extended sequences that flesh out the relationship between Harley and Joker, which was a central marketing point for the theatrical release, while Ayer has already previously confirmed that Justice League villain Steppenwolf was originally the big bad of the third act.

Ayer’s new comments prove the creator is still actively considering ways to get his vision across. The promise of additional VFX work could mean Ayer is open to reinserting Steppenwolf into the film, in a similar way to how Snyder added Darkseid into his version of Justice League. Fans and campaigners online will see the new Suicide Squad comments as a big step forward in the journey to releasing the original, intended version of DC’s most intriguing misfire.
