Petition Calls for Twitch to Ban Gambling Streams

Gambling streams have been a growing sticking point for some Twitch viewers. There are people who take issue with the practice because many streamers initially attracted their audience by playing games and have now shifted their focus to gambling. Others consider it problematic because it essentially promotes unregulated gambling to an audience substantially comprised of minors who are easily influenced. Lucrative gambling sponsorships like the one signed by former Twitch streamer Adin Ross, which paid nearly $4 million per month, have only added fuel to the fire.

Some people, like xQc, have even been criticized by other content creators for their Twitch gambling streams. With him in particular, the choice to gamble online while others watch is particularly questionable, given that recently xQc admitted that he has a gambling addiction and lost $1.85 million in just one month. In June 2021, he said he would stop creating that type of content due to the negative impact it could potentially have on his audience. Rather than quit, however, he recently began to host sponsored gambling streams. In defense of the decision, the streamer rationalized that it would have a positive effect on viewers because “people will see I lose and I’ll say, ‘Look, guys, the amount only goes down.’”

It was just a matter of time, therefore, before a petition was started to try to put an official stop to the gambling streams, or at least place some restrictions on creating such content. A Change.org petition launched on May 20 by Erin Jordan specifically calls out Twitch’s big money advertisers, including AT&T, Nvidia, Logitech, HP, Uber, and Adobe, among others. “Your advertisements on Twitch are being played next to Twitch broadcasters who promote unregulated online casinos that disproportionately damage young viewers and racial minorities,” the petition states.

These gambling streams are viewed by millions of people every week, and wealthy content creators play with huge sums of money. The gambling takes place in online casinos that are not only banned in most US states, but also allow minors to play without an ID. The petition points out that 41% of Twitch users are between the ages of 16 and 24. There are also undoubtedly millions of Twitch viewers who are children, who will be even more easily influenced by the content produced by their favorite Twitch personalities.

The petition asserts that gambling streams are not only unethical but also duplicitous in the manner in which they gather an audience. These streams, claims Jordan in the petition, begin in the Just Chatting section and are therefore promoted by Twitch. Once the content creator has enough viewers, the stream category will be changed to Slots, and some streamers get paid millions of dollars each month for this behavior.

Other Twitch content creators seem to agree with the sentiments expressed in the Change.org petition. Mizkif has turned down gambling sponsorships, partly because of the influence it might have on his audience. Similarly, Asmongold cited a desire to maintain his reputation as a streamer as the reason why he'll never “sell out” and do gambling streams. Ludwig recently admitted to his own addiction to gambling and explained why he also believes Twitch should put a stop to gambling streams.
