Pokemon Fan Makes Custom Pokedex DS

There are many iconic things associated with the Pokemon franchise. Perhaps one of the most recognizable items from the games, besides the famous red and white Poke Ball, is the Pokedex. Collecting data on all 900 Pokemon currently available to catch, the Pokedex is an incredibly useful device for Pokemon trainers and has featured in most Pokemon media from the games to each season of the anime. It even saw an overhaul in Pokemon Legends: Arceus, allowing players to complete tasks based on the Pokemon they catch.

One Pokemon fan decided that the digital versions of the Pokedex they can use in the game were simply not enough and decided to create a physical version of the famous device. Reddit user tomvdcr shared a short video of their impressive creation. With the traditional red and black color scheme of the Pokedex, any fan would be able to recognize the device from the first few seconds of the video. Then, tomvdcr reveals perhaps the most impressive part of their Pokemon tribute.

Not only is the physical Pokedex a faithful recreation of the one found in the games and anime, but it is actually a functioning Nintendo DS Lite with a shell taken from a Jakks brand Pokedex toy, meaning that a Pokemon fan can truly use the item as a trainer would. Any game up to the seventh generation of Pokemon games can be enjoyed through tomvdcr's creation. According to the Redditor, this is their fifth Pokedex commission, and every time they create one of these impressive machines they're asked why Nintendo never had such an idea.

Nintendo has found plenty of unusual ways to make Pokemon merchandise work, such as creating skateboards featuring classic Pokemon like Pikachu and Charizard. However, it does seem perplexing that the gaming giant never sought to combine its fictional handheld with a real one. For Pokemon fans wanting a Pokedex of their own, it seems like fan creations will be the only viable route for the time being.

This isn't the first time a Pokemon fan has made a faithful recreation of an item that can be found in the game. Perhaps more iconic than the Pokedex itself is the Poke Ball, the item used to catch all Pokemon except Ash's Pikachu. Fans have created their own Poke Balls for years, with some taking on the challenge of making a wooden ball to match those seen in Pokemon Legends: Arceus. Others have stuck with the modern Poke Balls and made some impressive designs that can even has the ball shake and light up as it does in the games and anime.
