Though Hot Tub Time Machine – which starred Rob Corddry, Craig Robinson, Clark Duke, and John Cusack – was not a major success at the box office, home video sales proved strong enough to warrant a sequel. And though most of the cast has returned for Hot Tub Time Machine 2, Cusack couldn’t due to a scheduling conflict; instead, Adam Scott (Parks and Recreation) will portray the son of Cusack’s character.

Now, the first trailer for the sequel – a red-band trailer – has been released, and it sees the cast of the first film (sans Cusack) traveling to the future to stop the murder of Corddry’s character from happening in the past.Somehow.

While the plot of these films isn’t particularly important, it does establish the setting. In the first film, the four main characters traveled back to the 1980s. Not only did the film make all kinds of ’80s jokes and references, but John Cusack’s character existed as something of a throwback to the many famous roles he had in that aforementioned decade (Better Off Dead, One Crazy Summer, Say Anything, et cetera). The sequel opts instead for a completely unfamiliar setting – the 2020s.

Considering the mockery – and glorification – of the ’80s was one of the highlights ofHTTM, it’s hard not to think that the trailer is missing something that made the first film so enjoyable. Of course, making fun of the future could be just as funny, but there’s not a lot of that on display in the trailer.

John Cusack seems to be sorely missing as well. Presumably, his character’s absence will be explained – after all, Adam Scott is playing his offspring in the future – but the character dynamic of the film isn’t nearly as strong, at least in the trailer. Then again, it doesn’t help that we don’t get to see Scott interacting with Corrdry, Robinson, and Duke, so perhaps that’ll change in the final film.

The film also stars Chevy Chase, Gilian Jacobs (Community), Jason Jones (The Daily Show), and more.
