Doctor Who returns to the small screen (and even select theaters) later this month, bringing along with it a new Doctor in Peter Capaldi. You can now watch a trailer for the “New Who” season eight premiere episode “Deep Breath”, as was directed by Ben Wheatley (A Field in England) and written by Steven Moffat – the latter now in his fourth year of service as the Doctor Who head writer/show-runner.

The official Deep Breath synopsis, which was released online last week, teases a new adventure with the Doctor and Clara (Jenna Coleman) in Victorian London, where they encounter such inexplicable things as a dinosaur running wild and “a spate of deadly spontaneous combustions.” As illustrated by the season 8 premiere’s trailer, the dynamic duo that is human Jenny Flint (Catrin Stewart) and Silurian Madame Vastra (Neve McIntosh) also show up, to help the Doctor and his companion resolve this mysterious conundrum.

Of course, the arrival of a new Doctor regeneration means other changes – including, the interior of the TARDIS getting a redesign. Meanwhile, Clara has to get a feel for what this Doctor is like – though, Coleman’s already told fans that he’s “a lot less human friendly and a lot less patient” than other recent Doctors, while Moffat’s teased that it’s only a matter of time before Whovians start referring to Capaldi as“the rude Doctor.”

“Deep Breath”, judging by the promotional footage, certainly feels connected to the recent Moffat-run seasons of Doctor Who, with its returning side players and callbacks to previous episodes (Clara’s “You’ve redecorated!” line is taken directly from the 50th anniversary special, “The Day of the Doctor”).

Moffat has said that he feels the series “needs to surprising again” and that he plans to really mix things up in season eight, but that’s not so much the vibe given off by the premiere footage thus far. However, that’s understandable, as “Deep Breath” is the episode that will transition Doctor Who from the Matt Smith era to Peter Capaldi’s run. Indeed, Capaldi’s Doctor (by the look of it) hasn’t even donnedhis attire of choice yet, much less gotten a proper hold on his tweaked personality.

The trailers for Doctor Who season 8 suggest Capaldi’s Doctor will spend much of this season wrestling with the question “Am I a good man?” – something that is easier asked than answered, when you’re a 2,000 year old Time Lord. Likewise, watching the Doctor constantly deal with this concern may lend a refreshing emotional touch to his various misadventures across space and time during the episodes ahead.

Doctor Who season 8 premieres on August 23rd, 2014.
