Geraint Thomas says his aim this year will be helping Team Sky leader Chris Froome regain his Tour de France title.

But the 28-year-old Welshman hopes to get the chance to go for some stage wins and lead the team in some of the early season week-long races.

Thomas enjoyed a fine 2014, recording his highest finish in the Tour, then winning gold and bronze medals at the Commonwealth Games.

"The Tour is the main aim and I will be working for Chris Froome," said Thomas.

"Maybe in the first week I will get a chance for myself but the majority of that race I will be racing for Froomey.

"But before that, I hope I will get a chance to lead the team in some of the week long races."

Thomas' first race of the new season will by the Tour Down Under which will be held from 17-25 January and he is already preparing in Australia.

After finishing the Tour in 22nd place overall, the best result of his five attempts at the gruelling race, Thomas took Commonwealth Games gold in the road race and bronze in the time trial.

Hi year was capped by being voted the BBC Cymru Wales Sports Personality 2014.

"It was the best year of my career for me personally," added Thomas, speaking to BBC Radio Wales Sport.

"Winning the Commonwealth Games, carrying the Welsh flag for the closing ceremony and then topping things off by winning BBC Wales Sports Personality was incredible.

"I also had a few decent results on the road with a little bit of bad luck with some crashes.

"But it was all a step forward along the way."
