Next Windows 10 for PC Build Could Bring the New Start Menu

Recommended Posts

Microsoft presented an improved Start menu at the Build 2016 developer conference a couple of weeks back, and the company said that this feature would be part of the Anniversary Update coming in the summer.

Obviously, before releasing it to the public, Microsoft wants to let insiders try it out and provide feedback, so rumor now has it that the company has already completed internal testing of the revamped Start menu and is getting ready to release it in preview builds of Windows 10.

The next Windows 10 for PC build, which is expected to see daylight next week, is thus very likely to include the overhauled Start menu, according to a report by WinBeta. At the same time, an improved Start screen is expected to be part of the release for the overhauled tablet mode.

What the new Start menu is all about

Microsoft’s new Start menu adopts an improved layout to make it easier for users to access their apps, so it comes with a hamburger menu hiding information such as user account and settings. The All Apps view is now in the main Start menu, alongside the most used apps, so it’s very clear that Microsoft wants to put apps at the center of everything.

The improved Start menu and Start screen will both be part of the Anniversary Update coming in the summer, but Microsoft still wants to collect feedback before rolling it out.

The company is actually requesting insiders to vote for the new Start menu, so it hasn’t yet made a decision on whether to release it to everyone or not. It all depends on how it’ll be received by insiders in these Windows 10 preview builds, so it remains to be seen if it’ll make it to retail users too.

For the moment, all we know is that the next Windows 10 build will land next week, but a specific day is not yet known.

I found upgrading to windows 10 to be a new learning experience. One that I did not like. I found it much easier to just overlay it with a shell with a windows 7 look.  Now I feel right at home.

I have helped many others with this same struggle. I never used 8 because I already had an XBox ...

I haven't gotten used to the new Start screen.  I slapped a Win 7 overlay and used that instead.

I think it is fair to say that this is the case for many people out there.

Big mistake by Microsoft in my opinion

I'm ok with current start menu. But then I'm ok with any GUI basically.

Still using Windows 7 at work, OS Sierra at home on most of my computers.  I use 10 occasionally whenever I encounter something that isn't so easy to do on the mac.
