Final Fantasy XV is one of the biggest video games set to arrive in 2016, but when the current director working on the Japanese role-playing game at Square Enix took over leadership of the team, the intellectual property was apparently dying and was considered to be past its peak.

The information comes from Hajime Tabata, who tells Game Informer that new fans were not attracted to the franchise and that the image associated with the game was not clear.

The game director of Final Fantasy XV adds, "One thing I've felt from fans is that they are disappointed in the current state of Final Fantasy, but still have hope regarding where the brand could go."

Hajime Tabata says that, since then, his studio decided to settle on its willingness to change the status quo as a core idea for the franchise. Moreover, it also decided to create a video game that offers an exception experience and to employ cutting-edge tech to use the power of hardware associated with the new home consoles.

Apparently, Final Fantasy XV is the first video game in the franchise to deliver on all these concepts since Final Fantasy VII, which was launched way back in 1997.

The new JRPG aims to improve both gameplay and narrative

Hajime Tabata has said that his team has used the extensive development time for Final Fantasy XV to introduce some new ideas to the series, which should appeal both to those who loved for years and to those who might try it out for the first time.

The Active Cross Battle system is designed to give players more control over the actions of their characters, making sure that they can choose from a range of moves by using the buttons on the controller rather than a menu system.

The world of Final Fantasy XV will be pretty similar to that of Earth, featuring cars and other tech advances, but magic is also part of the setting, and Noctis is one of the few people who can control it and use it to save his kingdom.

Square Enix is also planning to launch an anime associated with the game and a Kingsglaive movie to deliver extra lore about the universe.

Final Fantasy XV will be launched in September 2016 on the PlayStation 4 from Sony and the Xbox One from Microsoft, and Square Enix has been saying that it might consider working on a PC port once the first two versions are out.
