FLAC HISTORY MONTH 2: ELECTRIC BOOGALOO

Following the great success of February's FLAC History Month, NWCD will be continuing the basic concept of the event on a regular basis and we'd like to get the ball rolling again by showcasing record labels, past and present, that have been home to many talented recording artists over the years. Again, this will give you the opportunity to explore, discover and listen with a dedicated freeleech period for each group of labels. Our goal is to promote thoroughly filling in the gaps for each selected label on the site until we have label collages to be proud of.

Each group will consist of three labels being showcased for a duration of two weeks, with a new group of labels being introduced each Monday from now until roughly the end of August. All existing torrents and newly uploaded torrents that are featured in the labels collage will be automatically set to freeleech (torrents over 1GB will be neutral leech) for the two week period. Those labels will then be downgraded to neutral leech for the remainder of the event.

All already existing torrent groups and newly uploaded torrent groups will automatically become freeleech after being added to the labels collage (links can be found below or searched for here. Please assist the staff by adding any stray releases you may find to their respective label collages for all to enjoy.

To maintain standards and keep the level of moderation and editing to a minimum, please take note of the following:

  • Check your edition has not already been uploaded
  • Use the official title given and ensure you use the correct spelling
  • Include full lineage for vinyl uploads wherever possible
  • Report any dupes, mistakes or incorrect uploads
  • Pay attention to NWCD's Official Folder Naming Standards and use of edition.txt files
  • If using the discogs autofill, ensure artists are credited correctly as main artist, guest, producer etc before hitting "upload"
  • Add your torrent to the relevent label collage once you are satisfied with the quality of your upload

FLAC History Month 2: Round 1, Pick #1
Rephlex

Rephlex Records was a record label started in 1991 by electronic musician Richard D. James (aka Aphex Twin) and Grant Wilson-Claridge. Rephlex coined the term braindance to describe the otherwise uncategorisable output of Aphex Twin and Rephlex Records. The official definition is as follows: Braindance is the genre that encompasses the best elements of all genres, e.g traditional, classical, electronic music, popular, modern, industrial, ambient, hip hop, electro, house, techno, breakbeat, hardcore, ragga, garage, drum and bass, etc.

In 1989, Grant Wilson-Claridge met Aphex Twin DJing at The Bowgie, a club located just along the coast from Newquay, Cornwall. As Wilson-Claridge points out, back in 1989, "the Bowgie was the best club ever...this was before Newquay turned into the Cornish Ibiza" and it was very difficult to hear new and interesting music. Wilson-Claridge and Aphex Twin used to DJ on alternate weeks. When he noticed that Aphex Twin was playing his own tapes rather than records, Wilson-Claridge suggested that they press up some records. In the beginning, committing Aphex Twin’s recordings to vinyl was a way of making music the duo's friends wanted to hear. Due to their geographical dislocation they did not have access to the music they wanted to hear and so they decided to create their own. And so was born the Rephlex label.

Rephlex has released the music of many notable and influential electronic artists, among them Mike Paradinas, the founder of Planet Mu Records, synth pop revivalist and electro pioneer Ed Upton, prolific dance musician Luke Vibert, and electronic musician and virtuoso bass player Squarepusher. The label has also remastered and re-released the early works of its acid heroes 808 State and The Future Sound of London, and relaunched the career of electronic duo producers Black Devil with a re-release of their first record.

In 2014, James announced the closing of Rephlex Records. James stated that the closure was "something that needed to be done a long time ago. Me and my friend would have drifted apart, but actually the label did keep us together. It got to a point where I’d actually rather be his friend than be in business with him."

FLAC History Month 2: Round 1, Pick #2
Rise Above Records

Rise Above Records was founded in 1988 by then Napalm Death vocalist Lee Dorrian. It was started as part of the Enterprise Allowance Scheme and its initial aim was to release a few very limited edition hardcore punk 7″s.

As time has moved on Rise Above Records nowadays releases an eclectic mix of underground rock from Doom Metal to Acid Folk and classic styled Progressive rock and Proto Metal. The prime motive of the label is to put out interesting releases by bands that we actually like!

Subsidiary label Rise Above Relics specializes in detailed reissues and unreleased recordings from the golden days of underground rock and folk music (late 60s/early 70s).

Rise Above Records main artists include Uncle Acid & the deadbeats, Horisont, Blood Ceremony, Church of Misery, Astra as well as recent signings Death Penalty and Saturn. Past artists include Ghost, Electric Wizard, Witchcraft, Purson, SUNN O))), Orange Goblin and Circulus to name but a few.
