We're in a world full of reboots. With the trend of nostalgia dictating the way TV and film projects are produced, it seems like just about any beloved property has the potential to return from the dead. One beloved TV show that had a tragically short life was Freaks and Geeks, which ended up growing into a cult favorite. Freaks and Geeks was a star making moment for actors like Busy Phillips, James Franco, and Seth Rogen, so could it possibly return? Creator Paul Feig actually has an idea for the comedy, but it's not one you'd expect. Namely, he wants to write a musical with the beloved characters. As Feig tells it,

I've been saying for 15 years I so wanna do the Freaks and Geeks musical. I just gotta write the book for it, but I think it will happen one day because it's just sitting there, waiting to be done. A musical number of a dodgeball game, come on!

Rather than crafting a new season or reuniting the fantastic original cast, it looks like Paul Feig would rather than Freaks and Geeks into a new place. And with Mean Girls being crafted into a Broadway musical with writer Tina Fey, a Freaks and Geeks show doesn't seem entirely impossible.

Paul Feig's comments come from Freaks and Geeks: The Documentary (via EW) which chronicles the beloved yet doomed series' short tenure on the air. While a Freaks and Geeks musical is enough to get any self respecting TV fan shaking with anticipation, it also seems like Feig is disinterested in bringing the show back to TV. So keep re-watching on Netflix, because it doesn't look like we'll catch up with the Weirs decades after the show's finale.

While just about every TV show is being brought back for new seasons or revivals, Freaks and Geeks feels like a project that actually deserves a second run. The show was cancelled by NBC before its first season even completed, and the final set of episodes had to be released nearly a year later. Freaks and Geeks has grown in popularity since in the years since, and features some fantastic early work by the likes of Judd Apatow, Seth Rogen, and Jason Segal.

Then again, the timing for a Freaks and Geeks musical seems great as well. Tina Fey recently helped adapt her movie Mean Girls into a Broadway musical, writing the show's book and collaborating with husband Jeffrey Wayne Richmond on the music. If Paul Feig decides to actively develop the show, then he may be able to cite Fey's success in order to get the project rolling.

Of course, Paul Feig has also had this idea for 15 years without it coming to fruition, so it's unclear if it'll ever actually happen. For now, you can binge watch Freaks and Geeks first and only season over on Netflix.
