Josh Parr wins Hawkesbury Guineas with a heavy heart

JOSH Parr might have been riding with a heavy heart but he produced an inspired effort to win on Sambro at Hawkesbury on Saturday.

Sambro held off Victorem in a thriller for the Group 3 $200,000 Hawkesbury Guineas (1600m), giving Parr the second leg a big-race double after he partnered Pecans to win the Group 3 $175,000 (1300m).

But sandwiched between those wins, Parr rode Mackintosh who suffered a catastrophic injury as he crossed the line in sixth position in the Hawkesbury Gold Cup.

Mackintosh was found to have broken both sesamoids in a foreleg, an injury so severe veterinarians could not save the gelding.

“That is the worst part of this job,’’ Parr said. “It outweighs having to waste hard, it outweighs losing a ride, it outweighs everything.

“The absolute worst part of being a jockey is when a horse dies that you have ridden.

“For someone that is so emotional like me, it is very hard. I work with professionals who help me get into different mindsets — it is a process of having to move on.’’

Just 40 minutes after the Mackintosh tragedy, Parr rode a brilliant race on Sambro to win the Hawkesbury Guineas. Sambro ($5) fought back after it appeared he had been headed by Victorem ($2.60 favourite) with Beau Geste ($6.50) two lengths away third.

Parr managed to refocus with the ride of the day on Sambro, saving ground just behind the leaders with cover for most of the race and saving something for the finish where Victorem challenged strongly.

“My first plan was to press forward on the horse from his ‘sticky’ draw,’’ Parr said.

“But with all gear he has on at the barriers he came out slow. He was settled in the barrier but you have to take the blindfold off him at the last second and the barrier blanket hinders every horse a little bit.

“However, it ended up being perfect as we got into a nice position with the run of the race.

“I thought I buggered it up at the top of the straight when Beau Geste and Kurnel Jaxon split but I had already committed to following Warranty through so I told myself we have to win now.’’

The Chris Waller-trained Sambro finally delivered on the considerable promise he has shown at various times during his 15-start career, scoring just his second win.

“Sambro has always shown plenty of ability but he has also done plenty wrong,’’ said Waller’s stable representative Charlie Duckworth.

“He is finally coming of age, working it all out and he knows now not to over-race. His barrier manners have improved enormously since we fitted him with the blindfold.

“I’m sure he would have won a lot more than just two races if that had been the case a year ago. We have got his gear right and he can switch off now in his races which gives him the chance to show what he can really do.’’

Victorem, the Country Championship Final winner, was chasing his sixth successive win and lost no admirers with his narrow loss.

“The barrier made it awkward for him,’’ trainer Jenny Graham said. “But he has still run very well and we aren’t disappointed in him.

“This will run will probably take a bit out of him and I think backing up at Scone in two weeks might be a bit too soon for him so we might look at a race for him in Brisbane.’’

TAB BETTING REVIEW

HAWKESBURY
RACE ONE

She Knows got the day off to a good start for favourite backers with an effortless win in the TAB Highway Handicap (1100 metres). The Danny Williams-trained runner held three-quarters of the total investment on the race and hovered between $1.65 and $1.75 for most of the betting. She jumped a dominant $1.75 favourite in the end with only Our Rosemaree ($5) the only other runner in single figures. Kendalman ($26) and Bite The Media ($41) filled the minors with Our Rosemaree just behind in fourth.

BETS: She Knows $3,500 @ $1.85, $4,000 @ $1.80, $3,000 @ $1.75
RACE TWO

Punters knew what they were doing in this race with Graff landing several big bets in winning the TAB Clarendon Stakes (1300 metres). Coming from the second half of the field, the Kris Lees-trained runner was $3.10 to $2.70 on the day in beating Mickey Blue Eyes ($19) and Stunts ($3.60-$4.40).

BETS: Graff $1,200 @ $2.70
RACE THREE

Sirens Fury ($16-$13) didn’t have a great deal of support in the Blakes Marine Handicap (1300 metres). Darting up along the inside of the field in the home straight, Jason Collett got the best out of the Jason Coyle runner to beat the well-tried Stonebrook ($3.60) and Philosophy ($11). Gualois ($4.20) held favouritism for the majority of betting before blowing out to $4.20.

BETS: Stonebrook $3,500 @ $3.80, $1,500 @ $3.80
RACE FOUR

The most popular runner in the race was Up ‘N’ Rolling and as a result the Hawkesbury Gazette Handicap (1500 metres) represented a loss for TAB. The Chris Waller-trained runner was easily the best backed runner in terms of money held, accounting for nearly 30 per cent of the total investment. Hovering around the $4.20-$4.40 mark throughout betting, Up ‘N’ Rolling beat the well fancied Hallelujah Boy ($6-$5) while Hunter Jack ($6.50-$11) filled the minor end of the prize. Of the unplaced runners, Taikomochi ($5.50-$4.40) firmed up significantly throughout the day.

BETS: Up ‘N’ Rolling $4,000 @ $4.20, Bezel $5,000 @ $7.50, Poets Advocate $3,000 x $2,000 e/w @ $16/$4
RACE FIVE

Glenall didn’t attract the money it usually does when it lined up in the Hawkesbury XXX Gold Rush (1100 metres). The Team Hawkes runner always seems to have support whenever it goes around, however, on this occasion most TAB customers were concentrating on Tango Rain ($3.80-$2.90) which started a clear favourite. Finishing best, Glenall ($5.50-$4.80) defeated Spending To Win ($8.50-$5.50) while Kuro ($15-$31) finished well for third. Tango Rain was three times as popular as the next best backed runner in Passage Of Time ($5.50-$6) and held just under half of all bets on the race.

BETS: Glenall $1,000 @ $4.80, $1,000 @ $4.60, Tango Rain $3,000 @ $3.20, Spending To Win $2,000 @ $6, Le Cordon Bleu $3,000 e/w @ $18/$4.20
RACE SIX

Pecans ($10-$19) was a noted drifter but proved too strong in the Godolphin Crown (1300 metres). The Joe Pride-trained runner was ridden a treat by Josh Parr who timed his run perfectly, holding off the finishing burst of Ghisoni ($11) with the well-tried Invincibella ($5-$4.40) finishing third. White Moss ($5-$4.80) had the most money riding on it with Sedanzer ($4.40) and Invincibella next best. Nancy ($17) had good each way backing. Overall, White Moss held 28 per cent of the total investment.

BETS: Spright $5,000 @ $14, Ghisoni $1,000 @ $10, White Moss $1,000 @ $5 MULTIPLE TIMES
RACE SEVEN

Kingsguard ($6.50-$8.50) was too good for his rivals in the Group 3 Livamol Hawkesbury Gold Cup (1600 metres). Another runner from the Team Hawkes barn to win on the day, Kingsguard was overshadowed in betting by Duca Valentinois ($6-$3.90-$4.20) which was crunched late along with Ecuador ($3.20-$5) who was the one-time favourite but blew in betting. Kingsguard packed too much for Ecuador, which ran another gallant race, while McCreery ($10) was popular with TAB customers and wound up third in front of Duca Valentinois. Ecuador was the most popular runner with TAB customers and held approximately 40 per cent of the total investment.

BETS: Ecuador $3,000 @ $5, Duca Valentinois $2,800 @ $4.40, $3,000 @ $3.90
RACE EIGHT

Sambro ($5-$4.60-$5) was kept safe in betting and finished best to take out an exciting edition of the Hawkesbury Guineas (1400 metres). Ridden perfectly by Josh Parr, Sambro found a split at the top of the straight and sprinted sharply to hold off the fast-finishing favourite Victorem ($2.70), with Beau Geste ($10-$5.50-$7.50) filling third after enjoying a good run. Victorem was easily the best tried in the race and was nearly twice as popular as the next best backed runner, which was Warranty ($5.50). The favourite held 47 per cent of the market.

BETS: Sambro $400 x $2,400 e/w @ $5/$1.80, Victorem $5,000 @ $2.70, $5,000 @ $2.60, $4,000 @ $2.60
RACE NINE

Favourite backers left Hawkesbury on a high after Roman Son was a dominant winner of the Provincial Stayers Handicap (2100 metres). Opening the day as a $1.90 favourite, Roman Son never hit black odds and bottomed out at $1.75 on the day. The Richard Freedman-trained runner was a dominant favourite and one of the best supported runners across the country. He defeated Mazaz ($8) and Mandalay Bay ($26) filled the minors. Roman Son held three quarters of the market on the final event on the card and landed several big bets.

BETS: Roman Son $6,000 @ $1.75
