Interstate raiders strike early, but don’t write off the locals just yet

THE interstate raiders dominated the features on Saturday, winning all four legs of the quadrella at Doomben, but there were a number of encouraging runs from the local contingent from a longer term point of view.

Not the least was Most Important’s second behind Impending in the Victory Stakes.

Based on ratings heading into the race, he will meet Impending at least 2kg better in the Stradbroke in a few weeks.

“I wouldn’t want to swap him for any other horse,” trainer Tony Gollan said.

“He’s not known as a first-up horse, but that didn’t surprise me to see him do that today.

“The campaign sets up perfectly for him now because he loves those two-week breaks.

“Probably not so much next time in the Doomben 10,000, but from his third run and then fourth run in the Stradroke he will be at his top, because we know he’s a horse that builds into his preparation.

“I just hope he gets weighted according to where he’s at. To this stage, he’s a Brisbane summer carnival horse and I hope he doesn’t get penalised too harshly for running well in a weight-for-age race like that.”

Similarly, owner Kim McCasker’s promising three-year-old Hang did his Queensland Derby chances no harm after picking himself up off the deck in the Gunsynd Classic.

“He got put out of it early. He’s done a great job to finish where he has,” McCasker said of the Ben Currie-trained gelding.

Stablemate Mishani Hustler and runner-up Shamurt should be competitive in the better two-year-old races after carving out an overall time in the Dalrello that wasn’t far inferior to Impending.

STEWARDS HIT MISS
STEWARDS hit Victorian trainer Mark Webb with a $500 fine following the form reversal win of Miss Iano on Saturday.

The mare turned a 22-length last-start defeat into a $41 win in the Benchmark 75 at Doomben. When stewards phoned Webb, he explained a virus had gone through the stable of the three horses he had sent north from Victoria and that was the reason for the mare’s poor performance previously.

Chief steward Allan Reardon said it was clearly in the rules of racing that such incidents needed to be reported.

Webb’s stable representative Slim Homann said: “We couldn’t put our hands on what went wrong last time because we thought she could win that day. Our form analyst rated her a $6.50 chance in this, so it’s nice to get one out of two.”

Miss Iano wasn’t the only form reversal on Saturday.

Idle Situation did plenty of work at Caloundra last time and dropped out to be beaten 15 lengths before landing a skinny opening event.

BOBBY’S BIG ROLE
BOBBY El-issa has been cast in the role of Frankie Dettori in the Michelle Payne movie Ride Like A Girl.

“I went down for the audition and a couple of minutes later they rang back and told me I had the part,” El-issa said. “I haven’t seen the script yet, but we go down for a fitting (this Friday) and then they are shooting the following week.”

Dettori rode Max Dynamite, who was runner-up to Payne’s Prince Of Penzance in the 2015 Melbourne Cup. “I’m pretty excited being a part of something like this and I can’t wait for it to start,” El-issa said.

The jockey had just one ride at Doomben on Saturday, winning on $41 pop Miss Iano.

BUNDLE OF JOY
MATT McGillivray and his partner Aimee welcomed their first child, Max John McGillivray on Anzac Day. McGillivray had to forfeit rides on the Sunshine Coast on Friday to take the little fella home. “Sleeping has been pretty good so far, so I hope it stays that way,” he said.

McGillivray is still waiting the Internal Review result for his appeal against a one-month suspension for his ride on Mr Epic at Doomben on March 31.

DIAMOND DAYS
TAN Tat Diamond was dragged out of the retirement paddock to make his successful return to racing off a near two-year break on Saturday. Trainer Steve O’Dea said two serious tendon injuries had seemingly ended the gelding’s career and he was set to live out his days in the lush paddocks of Aquis Farm.

“A lot of the credit has to go to the team at Aquis,” O’Dea said. “He was in the right place to be rehabilitated. In the end, he was just hanging out there, so they decided why not give him another go. It surprised me that he’s won like that. I thought they would be too sharp for him over 1050m.”

THE Thoroughbred Racing History Association is holding a special event on Tuesday night at Doomben to celebrate the history of the winter racing carnival. The night will feature historic calls of past winter carnivals, interviews with trainers and jockeys and a look through a showcase of memorabilia and photographs of the great horses. Special guest will be former jockey Graham Cook, who made history in the winter of 1975, winning the treble of the Stradbroke, Doomben Cup and Doomben 10,000.
